Abstract

When puberty is precocious is a question in and of itself. The possibility that puberty is st starting earlier in children of the 21 century has become a contentious topic during the past few years. It has received much attention in the medical literature as well as the lay press. As research methods and interpretation of data vary between the studies that have attempted to resolve this issue, we are pleased to present the reader with three very different approaches to addressing the same question. We are thrilled to have experts in the field of basic science share the most up-to-date understanding of the mechanisms involved in the complicated interplay of factors that initiate puberty in different species. Also reviewed in the book are the many fascinating causes of precocity and new observations regarding the influence of the in utero environment and the affect of adoption from a developing country on pubertal timing. We have also included cutting edge discussions of endocrine disruptors, and the often overlooked psychosocial ramifications of precocious puberty. We believe that this book will be useful to primary care providers as well as specialists who deal with issues regarding abnormalities of puberty and reproduction. The topics covered in these chapters will provide the reader with a solid understanding of the diverse and fascinating causes of precocious puberty and different treatment options.

Abstract

Sexuality is a central part of our identity as humans, but when individuals struggle with matters of sexual identity, orientation, or expression, these issues can be embarrassing for clients to discuss—and equally hard for practitioners to feel comfortable with. Expressive Therapies for Sexual Issues challenges social work practitioners to think outside conventional forms of treatment as well as conventional ideas about sexuality. Reflecting the diversity of sexual experience (both positive and negative), this concise clinical guide introduces readers to a range of art-based therapies suited to working with clients on their intimate concerns and helping give voice to concepts and feelings that are often difficult to name. Case examples depict a gamut of clients—a group as diverse as gender-questioning youth, abuse survivors, and sex offenders—as they strive for greater self-awareness, negotiate the sexual in their lives, and move beyond trauma, detailing practitioners’ creative interventions as companions on these journeys. Contributors keep a clear focus on the delicacy of the therapeutic relationship, ethical fine lines, and the ongoing need for sensitivity and open-mindedness as they examine healing possibilities for: Music Photography Poetry Monologue and performance Visual art Movement and dance. Sandplay Reader-friendly and jargon-free, Expressive Therapies for Sexual Issues breaks consequential new ground for social work professionals and counselors seeking to integrate expressive modalities, and more familiarity with sexual matters, into their practice.

Abstract

From the sixteenth to the eighteenth centuries, the Spanish and Portuguese Inquisitions conducted a number of trials against individuals accused by members of their communities of being of the other gender – men accused of being women and women accused of being men – or even hermaphrodites. Using new inquisitorial sources, this study examines the complexities revolving around transgenderism and the construction of gender identity in the early modern Iberian World. It throws light upon the manner in which the Inquisition, medical practitioners and the wider society in Spain and Portugal responded to transgenderism and on the self-perception of individuals whose behaviour, whether consciously or unconsciously, flouted these social and sexual conventions.

Abstract

For every female suicide in Ireland, there are five male suicides. This book is based on fieldwork done in and around Cork, Ireland between 2008 and 2012 among some forty young lads, aged 18-34. This anthropological approach aims to help explain why some groups in a specific society or community are more prone to commit suicide than others. In addition to suicide, this book focuses extensively on related issues such as alcohol, drug abuse, and other self-destructive behaviors prominent within Irish lad culture. This includes peer pressures and loyalties, chauvinistic jargon, homophobic bullying, humor, and the culture of mocking so as to grasp the cultural expectations of this particular form of masculinity. The everyday workings of gender segregation and gender-appropriateness is examined in detail by informants while addressing the underlying question whether increased gender equality—which includes men—could lessen young men's vulnerability to self-destructive behaviors and suicide in Ireland.

Abstract

As a child, he played with trucks and action figures and wanted to be a firefighter. As a youth, he began dressing up in his mother's clothes and becoming sexually aroused. When he started dating, he dreamed of being his girlfriends. "What am I?" he asked his therapist. "A transsexual? A transvestite? Something else?" This vignette describes a man who experiences autogynephilia: a paraphilic disorder in which men who are attracted to women are also erotically aroused by the idea of being women and sometimes want to undergo sex reassignment and live as women. Men Trapped in Men's Bodies explores the phenomenon of autogynephilia, arguing cogently that it accounts for many cases of male-to-female (MtF) transsexualism in Western countries. The book demonstrates that not all MtF transsexuals conform to the familiar stereotype of women trapped in men's bodies: Many resemble—and even describe themselves as—men trapped in men's bodies. Sometimes at odds with conventional wisdom about the interrelationships of sex, gender, and sexuality, the book examines the manifestations and clinical implications of autogynephilia, based on narratives provided by over 300 autogynephilic MtF transsexuals and transgender persons: stories of shame and confusion, courage and self-acceptance. The final chapter examines current and possible future treatment options for autogynephilic gender dysphoric men. Included in this important volume are: • Narratives by autogynephilic transsexuals • Developmental histories of autogynephilic transsexuals • Descriptions of different types of autogynephilia • Autogynephilia's relationship to heterosexuality • Narratives by nontranssexual autogynephiles • Contrasting views of the meaning of autogynephilia For researchers who study gender dysphoria, MtF transsexualism, paraphilias, and related conditions, and for clinicians who treat patients with these conditions, Men Trapped in Men's Bodies provides an essential resource for understanding an underappreciated aspect of MtF transsexualism. For MtF transsexuals and transgender persons, as well as their partners, family members, friends, and associates, the book is a welcome new source of information and validation. .

Abstract

Wendy Kline's lucid cultural history of eugenics in America emphasizes the movement's central, continuing interaction with popular notions of gender and morality. Kline shows how eugenics could seem a viable solution to problems of moral disorder and sexuality, especially female sexuality, during the first half of the twentieth century.

Abstract

Sexualities and Identities of Minority Women Edited by Sana Loue, Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland, OH This singular volume addresses the issues confronting minority women of diverse sexual orientations (lesbian, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, and questioning)—challenges that often diverge substantially from those of other women of color, and from those affecting minority men who have sex with men. Contributions from scholars, public health professionals, and members of the community reveal a wide range of developmental, relational, political, and legal concerns that have been given scant attention in either the minority or the sexual minority literature. From these varied perspectives, experiences of stigma and unity, isolation and hope, are discussed with rare sensitivity and insight. Key areas of coverage include: Development of sexual identity and minority identity: similarities and differences. Minority sexual status among minorities/minority status among sexual minorities. Constructing the family: social and legal aspects. Navigating the health care system: from access to care to disclosure to providers. Safety and violence in the workplace and community. Religion and spirituality: exclusion and support. Sexualities and Identities of Minority Women is not only a source of practice-enhancing information, but also an opportunity to hear the voices of its subject, making the book especially relevant to health care providers, and to professionals and researchers in psychology, sexuality, public health, health policy, social work, and counseling. It is suitable as a graduate-level text in any of these fields.
