Abstract

Martin Luther was a German monk, priest, professor of theology and iconic figure of the Protestant Reformation. He strongly disputed the claim that freedom from God's punishment for sin could be purchased with money. He confronted indulgence salesman Johann Tetzel with his Ninety-Five Theses in 1517. His refusal to retract all of his writings at the demand of Pope Leo X in 1520 and the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521 resulted in his excommunication by the pope and condemnation as an outlaw by the Emperor. -wikipedia.

Abstract

A Companion to the Swiss Reformation describes the course of the Protestant Reformation in the Swiss Confederation over the course of the sixteenth century. Its essays examine the successes as well as the failures of the reformation movement, considering not only the institutional churches but also the spread of Anabaptism. The volume highlights the different form that the Reformation took among the members of the Confederation and its allied territories, and it describes the political, social and cultural consequences of the Reformation for the Confederation as a whole. Contributors are: Irena Backus, Jan-Andrea Bernhard, Amy Nelson Burnett, Michael W. Bruening, Erich Bryner, Emidio Campi, Bruce Gordon, Kaspar von Greyerz, Sundar Henny, Karin Maag, Thomas Maissen, Regula Schmid-Keeling, Martin Sallmann, and Andrea Strübind.

Abstract

The nature and role of positive law has largely been neglected in recent Protestant theology and social ethics. Modern Protestantism and Positive Law introduces and critically summarizes a tradition in Continental Protestant thought about human law, drawing on writings of Barth, Brunner, Ellul, Thielicke, Wolf, Pannenberg, Huber, and Kreβ, many of which have not been translated into English. The book argues that law is an essential political and social institution within developed societies, one that is normative and dependent on an encompassing vision of justice but that also necessarily reflects the contemporary pluralism of those societies. Modern Protestantism and Positive Law argues that theological and ethical perspectives on positive law developed by Protestant thinkers have a place in reflection on positive law, provided they are conceived and expressed in a manner appropriately respectful of the diversity of contemporary opinion regarding the expression of religious perspectives in the public arena.

Abstract

Abstract

Luther provides a clear exposition of the state of German politics on the eve of the Reformation. Dr Mullett concentrates particularly on the evolution of Luther's thought and its central preoccupation with re-aligning the church's theology with that of the New Testament.

Abstract

This Special Issue will publish articles based on papers presented at the Teaching the Christian Intellectual Tradition Conference held at Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, on October 6-8, 2016. The conference theme, Teaching the Reformations, explored pedagogical methods for integrating the study of the Reformations into undergraduate curricula, particularly but not exclusively into core curriculum and general education courses. The pedagogical focus of Teaching the Reformations will extend to the Special Issue and will differentiate this issue in the vast field of Reformation studies.

Abstract

"This book is the first of two volumes that consider the state and relevance of Reformed theology today in light of the 500-year celebration of the Reformation in 2017. It contains biblical, historical-theological and systematic-theological perspectives on Reformed theology and is specifically aimed at discussing the contemporary relevance of a Reformed theological approach. Though the themes are wide-ranging and by no means exhaustive, it will give the reader a sense of the current debates in Reformed circles and the various approaches followed to address contemporary issues ... True to the Reformed slogan of sola scriptura, Chapters 1-4 deal with biblical interpretation and methodology ... In the spirit of semper Reformanda, Chapters 5-9 discuss various historical-theological and systematic-theological topics such as the 16th-century debates between the Calvinists and Anabaptists, the historical effects of important events during 1516, Luther's concept of paradoxical freedom and the contemporary relevance of Calvin's theocentric approach to anthropology ... The last chapter deals with the dialogue between the Roman Catholic tradition and the Reformed tradition 500 years after the Reformation"--Foreword.

Abstract

Christians today will find new cause to rejoice in what God did in the sixteenth century through weak and fallible men and women. His people sought to submit themselves to the Word of God and lead his followers in a godly and faithful response to the gospel of grace. The Reformation is not a dead movement but a living legacy that can still capture the imagination and encourage men and women in their own Christian discipleship.
