El libro, como objeto y soporte del conocimiento, se encuentra inmerso en una importante dinámica de cambios. La irrupción de nuevas maneras de entender la industria editorial, en la que los formatos electrónicos y digitales ocupan espacios cada vez más significativos, supone un replanteamiento del concepto y el uso del libro impreso en la sociedad occidental de principios del siglo XXI. Sobre este territorio de convivencia y tensiones entre el libro impreso y el libro electrónico, el autor traza una panorámica que abarca distintos aspectos técnicos y socioculturales del mundo de la edición. El estudio de los modos de producción, distribución y consumo del libro, las políticas culturales en el ámbito editorial, determinadas cuestiones legales, el papel de las bibliotecas en este nuevo contexto, y, por último, el debate en torno a los cambios y tendencias en los modos de lectura y escritura desde la perspectiva del lector, que configuran un ensayo ágil y riguroso, imprescindible para conocer el futuro del libro en los próximos años. Alessandro Cavaliere ejerce la docencia en la licenciatura de Publicidad y Relaciones Públicas en la Universidad de Alicante (Área de Comunicación Audiosvisual y Publicidad).
