De media worden doorgaans als zeer invloedrijk voorgesteld: 'dat komt door de media' is een staande uitdrukking. Meestal verwijst men dan naar al dan niet 'verderfelijke' tendenties in de inhoud van bijvoorbeeld video's, strips, kranten, tijdschriften of televisieprogramma's. Om dat te onderzoeken zijn allerlei inhoudsanalyseprocedures ontwikkeld, die een kenmerk gemeenschappelijk hebben: het materiaal moet worden gelezen. Dat lijkt een basisvaardigheid, maar bij nader inzien zijn er allerlei methodische haken en ogen aan verbonden. In dit boek worden verschillende aspecten van het onderzoek van de media-inhoud toegelicht aan de hand van concrete onderzoeksvoorbeelden. Aan de orde komen zowel kwantitatieve als kwalitatieve en geautomatiseerde procedures; zowel de krant, de televisie als Internetmateriaal.

Qu'il soit écrit ou verbal, qu'il constitue une réponse aux questions du chercheur ou qu'il résulte d'une quelconque interaction sociale, le discours occupe une place privilégiée parmi les matériaux empiriques du chercheur en sciences sociales. Ce donné, chargé de toute la complexité du langage, ne peut être valablement appréhendé par une lecture immédiate. Diverses méthodes se sont constituées avec une double visée : la mise au point de procédés d'analyse et leur adaptation à une perspective sociologique. Pour les désigner brièvement, on utilise le terme d'analyse de contenu. Mais au-delà de cette appellation commune, la diversité des méthodes laisse perplexes les utilisateurs. Dans cet ouvrage, quatre praticiens exposent et appliquent leur méthode : l'herméneutique collective, l'analyse textuelle de J. Gritti, une méthode d'analyse de l'ethos proposée par Chr. Lalive d'Epinay et l'analyse structurale. Le lecteur pourra ainsi cerner l'apport respectif de chacune de ces méthodes et sera invité à une lecture comparative et critique. Cette réflexion sera amorcée dans deux directions : celle d'une confrontation avec la tradition des sciences du langage et celle de la pertinence du lien qui s'établit entre la méthode et l'intention sociologique. L'ouvrage s'adresse à l'étudiant, au chercheur, à l'enseignant et à tout lecteur intéressé par les sciences sociales ou les analyses qualitatives.

In Film and Television After 9/11, editor Wheeler Winston Dixon and eleven other distinguished film scholars discuss the production, reception, and distribution of Hollywood and foreign films after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, and examine how moviemaking has changed to reflect the new world climate.While some contemporary films offer escapism, much of mainstream American cinema since 9/11 is centered on the desire for a "just war" in which military reprisals and escalation of warfare appear to be both inevitable and justified. Films of 2002 such as Black Hawk Down, Collateral Damage, and We Were Soldiers demonstrate a renewed audience appetite for narratives of conflict, reminiscent of the wave of filmmaking that surrounded American involvement in World War II.The attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon galvanized the American public initially, yet film critics wonder how this will play out over time. The Road Movie Book is the first comprehensive study of an enduring but ever-changing Hollywood genre, its place in American culture, and its legacy to world cinema. The road and the cinema both flourished in the twentieth century, as technological advances brought motion pictures to a mass audience and the mass produced automobile opened up the road to the ordinary American. When Jean Baudrillard equated modern American culture with 'space, speed, cinema, technology' he could just as easily have added that the road movie is its supreme emblem. The contributors explore how the road movie has confronted and represented issues of nationhood, sexuality, gender, class and race. They map the generic terrain of the road movie, trace its evolution on American television as well as on the big screen from the 1930s through the 1980s, and, finally, consider road movies that go off the road, departing from the US landscape or travelling on the margins of contemporary American culture.
