Abstract

"If postmodernism is indeed 'the cultural logic of late capitalism', why did typical postmodernist themes like ornament, colour, history and identity find their application in the architecture of the socialist Second World? How do we explain the retreat into paper architecture and theoretical discussion in societies still nominally devoted to socialist modernization? Exploring the intersection of two areas of growing scholarly interest - postmodernism and the architecture of the former socialist world - this edited collection stakes out new ground in charting architecture's various transformations in the 1970s and 80s. Fourteen essays together explore the question of whether or not architectural postmodernism had a specific Second World variant. The collection demonstrates both the unique nature of Second World architectural phenomena and also assesses connections with western postmodernism. The case studies cover the vast geographical scope from Eastern Europe to China and Cuba. They address a wealth of aesthetic, discursive and practical phenomena, interpreting them in the broader socio-political context of the last decades of the Cold War. The result provides a greatly expanded map of recent architectural history, which redefines postmodernist architecture in a more theoretically comprehensive and global way."--Bloomsbury Publishing.

Abstract

What can we know about ourselves and the world through the sense of touch and what are the epistemic limits of touch? Scepticism claims that there is always something that slips through the epistemologist's grasp. A Touch of Doubt explores the significance of touch for the history of philosophical scepticism as well as for scepticism as an embodied form of subversive political, religious, and artistic practice. Drawing on the tradition of scepticism within nineteenth- and twentieth-century continental philosophy and psychoanalysis, this volume discusses how the sense of touch uncovers contradictions within our knowledge of ourselves and the world. It questions 1) what we can know through touch, 2) what we can know about touch itself, and 3) how our experience of touching the other and ourselves throws us into a state of doubt. This volume is intended for students and scholars who wish to reconsider the experience of touching in intersections of philosophy, religion, art, and social and political practice.

Abstract

The publication investigates the opportunities for upgrading the spatial structure of apartments created during the post-war building boom between 1960 and 1970. The authors analyze typical existing layouts in the context of social developments which, in recent decades, have led to significant changes in the form of living and in the structure of households. To what extent do the functionally optimized housing units meet the requirements of today’s society, and how adaptable are they to new forms of living? Is it possible to achieve a workable result with small interventions? In the theoretical part the authors discuss theories on design strategies and political transformation processes, the importance of which is demonstrated in the project part using practical contemporary examples.

Abstract

What is today known as the Vienna International Airport was originally erected in 1954, and has since been extensively expanded. Between 2006 and 2011, the annual number of passengers using the airport rose from 17 to over 21 million. In order to ensure the safety of the growing numbers of passengers, and to deliver state-of-the-art logistics for freight transport, the decision was made to fundamentally restructure the airport. In 2005 the new tower (Zechner & Zechner) commenced operations, as did Terminal 1A (IttenBrechbühl / Baumschlager Eberle / Eichinger or Knechtl). Further components were later added, and in 2012 the spectacular new Check-in 3, formerly "Skylink" (IttenBrechbühl / Baumschlager Eberle), was completed. With camera in hand, the architect, artist and photographer Roman Bönsch has documented this metamorphosis of one of Europe's largest construction projects from the outset. This work presents his photographs in book form for the first time, complemented by additional photography from Robert Gruber and Larry R. Williams. An essay by Ralph Knickmeier and further texts by Romana Hasler, Sebastian Illichmann, Robert Keiser, Peter Kleemann, Peter Mayerhofer, Thomas D. Trummer and Norbert Steiner round out the book.

Abstract

"Whatever 'ugliness' is, it remains a problematic category in architectural aesthetics - alternately vilified and appropriated, either to shock or to invert conventions of architecture. This book presents eighteen new essays which rethink ugliness in architecture - from brutalism to eclectic postmodern architectural productions - and together offer a diverse reappraisal of the history and theory of postmodern architecture and design. The essays address both broad theoretical questions on ugliness and postmodern aesthetics, as well as more specific analyses of significant architectural examples dating from the last decades of the twentieth century, addressing the relation between the aesthetic register of ugliness and aesthetic concepts such as brutalism, kitsch, the formless, ad hoc-ism, the monstrous, or the grotesque. The aim of this volume is not simply to document the history of a postmodern anti-aesthetic through case studies. Instead, it aims to shed light on an aesthetic problem that has been largely overlooked in the agenda of architectural theory, the question if and how ugliness can be of interest to architecture; or if and how architecture can make good use of ugliness"--
