This open access book assesses the profound impact of Japan’s aspirations to become a great power on Japanese security, democracy and foreign relations. Rather than viewing the process of normalization and rejuvenation as two decades of remilitarization in face of rapidly changing strategic environment and domestic political circumstances, this volume contextualizes Japan’s contemporary international relations against the longer grain of Japanese historical interactions. It demonstrates that policies and statecraft in the Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s era are a continuation of a long, unbroken and arduous effort by successive generations of leaders to preserve Japanese autonomy, enhance security and advance Japanese national interests. Arguing against the notion that Japan cannot work with China as long as the US-Japan alliance is in place, the book suggests that Tokyo could forge constructive relations with Beijing by engaging China in joint projects in and outside of the Asia-Pacific in issue areas such as infrastructure development or in the provision of international public goods. It also submits that an improvement in Japan-China relations would enhance rather than detract Japan-US relations and that Tokyo will find that her new found autonomy in the US-Japan alliance would not only accord her more political respect and strategic latitude, but also allow her to ameliorate the excesses of American foreign policy adventurism, paving for her to become a truly normal great power.

This open access book is about understanding the processes involved in the transformation of smallholder rice farming in the Lower Mekong Basin from a low-yielding subsistence activity to one producing the surpluses needed for national self-sufficiency and a high-value export industry. For centuries, farmers in the Basin have regarded rice as “white gold”, reflecting its centrality to their food security and well-being. In the past four decades, rice has also become a commercial crop of great importance to Mekong farmers, augmenting but not replacing its role in securing their subsistence. This book is based on collaborative research to (a) compare the current situation and trajectories of rice farmers within and between different regions of the Lower Mekong, (b) explore the value chains linking rice farmers with new technologies and input and output markets within and across national borders, and (c) understand the changing role of government policies in facilitating the on-going evolution of commercial rice farming. An introductory section places the research in geographical and historical context. Four major sections deal in turn with studies of rice farming, value chains, and policies in Northeast Thailand, Central Laos, Southeastern Cambodia, and the Mekong Delta. The final section examines the implications for rice policy in the region as a whole. Rob Cramb is Honorary Professor of Agricultural Development in the School of Agriculture and Food Sciences at The University of Queensland, Australia. He has taught, researched, and consulted on agricultural and rural development in Southeast Asia for over forty years. His previous books include Land and Longhouse: Agrarian Change in the Uplands of Sarawak and (with John McCarthy) The Oil Palm Complex: Smallholders, Agribusiness and the State in Indonesia and Malaysia.

L’Asie du Sud – l’Inde en tête – a réinventé le sécularisme, en l’adaptant à l’immense diversité religieuse de la région. Mais les dernières décennies ont vu cette réinvention subir, dans chaque pays, de sérieux coups de boutoir – indépendamment de la religion dominante (hindouisme, islam ou bouddhisme) et des régimes politiques (démocratiques ou autoritaires). C’est ce processus que ce volume entend analyser à travers l’étude des dynamiques à l’œuvre dans chacun des pays concernés, de l’Inde à l’Afghanistan, en passant par le Pakistan, le Bangladesh, Sri Lanka et le Népal. Partout, la tendance est à une identification de l’Etat à la religion majoritaire qui, certes, varie beaucoup selon les pays. Les minorités religieuses sont naturellement les premières à ressentir l’influence de ce déclin du sécularisme ; là encore, certaines convergences apparaissent, se lisant en tout premier lieu dans la morphologie de la violence. Mais si le constat de cette évolution fait l’objet d’un consensus, sa nature et son ampleur restent largement débattues, comme le montrent les différentes tonalités des contributions ici réunies. Au-delà du sécularisme, ce numéro s’attache aussi à déconstruire le couple religion-politique à travers des études de cas où le lien de causalité est loin d’être systématique, même lorsqu’il est attendu, et où la relation entre les champs connaît des transformations inédites.

This open access IMISCOE Regional Reader explores the issues faced by migrant groups in Southeast Asia and the challenges of getting of their human rights recognized. It analyses the different responses, or lack thereof, of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to these highly complex situations which are shaped by contemporary debates around borders and concepts of states, migrants’ rights as well as access to citizenship and how these concepts and paradigms are intertwined with issues such as agency and resilience of migrants. This book is open access under a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license. This book is arranged and developed around the theme of “2050 China,” it analyzes the factors and advantages of the Chinese road to socialist modernization, explores and summarizes the development goal and the basic logic of the socialist modernization of China, and further shows the general basis of the primary stage of socialism. According to the report delivered at the 19th Party Congress, and according to the “two-stage” strategic plan, this book looks ahead in detail to the overarching objective and sub-objectives of essentially achieving socialist modernization by 2035, discusses the building of a great modern socialist country in all respects from the perspective of the Party’s six-sphere integrated plan of economic, political, cultural, social, ecological civilization, and national defense construction, and provides policy proposals. This book also analyzes the influence and the effect of the socialist modernization with Chinese characteristics on the world and it further presents the third centenary goal. In conclusion, this book is an elaboration of the work of the Institute for Contemporary China Studies, Tsinghua University. It reflects the intellectual innovation in the authors’ research on contemporary China, as well as the authors’ foresight and predictions about China’s future development.
