Abstract

Life depends on the ability of living organisms to effectively harness the chemical potential of their environment, namely the sun, for energy, and a certain number of molecules which exist on the Earth’s surface, such as water, oxygen, carbon dioxide, nitrogen, etc. These molecules need to be activated if benefit is to be derived from them, which requires profound electronic modifications that only metal ions can provide. Truly extraordinary metalloenzymes with highly subtle mechanisms are responsible for this activation. Bioinorganic chemistry straddles the disciplines of chemistry and biology and is in full expansion today. This discipline was born of the recent realisation that life is not solely organic but also “mineral”, and that no life can exist without metals.

Abstract

Metal ions play an important role in analytical chemistry, organometallic chemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, and materials chemistry. This book, Descriptive Inorganic Chemistry Researches of Metal Compounds, collects research articles, review articles, and tutorial description about metal compounds. To perspective contemporary researches of inorganic chemistry widely, the kinds of metal elements (typical and transition metals including rare earth; p, d, f-blocks) and compounds (molecular coordination compounds, ionic solid materials, or natural metalloenzyme) or simple substance (bulk, clusters, or alloys) to be focused are not limited. In this way, review chapters of current researches are collected in this book.

Abstract

Arsenic - Analytical and Toxicological Studies is a collection of original works focused on arsenic occurrence and chemistry, methods for arsenic determination and removal and arsenic toxicity and health risks. The most commonly used techniques for arsenic quantification and speciation, such as atomic absorption spectrometry, inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry, and inductively coupled plasma-emission spectrometry, among others, and the various procedures applied for arsenic separation and removal are exhaustively described. The mechanism of arsenic-induced toxicology, involving arsenic interaction with critical thiols in proteins and the health risks associated with exposure to arsenic, is also discussed.

Abstract

The book Ligand describes the diversity and versatility of ligands, covering structural features, donor-acceptor properties and secondary functions like molecular recognition. Moreover, this book also provides a comprehensive account on the applicability like catalysis, sensors, supramolecular assembly, photochemical property, bioinorganic chemistry, and so on. The advancement of fundamentals in ligand design and the control of physicochemical properties of coordination compounds has largely increased emphasis on understanding the structural and electronic features toward different perspectives in materials science. In this regard, this book has a special appeal to chemists, biologists and others. This book will be beneficial for the graduate students, teachers, researchers and other professionals who are interested to fortify and expand their knowledge in chemistry, biology, microbiology, biotechnology, materials science, environmental science and so on.

Abstract

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced by healthy cells and are maintained at physiological levels by antioxidant systems. However, when ROS increase in number, a condition of oxidative stress occurs, leading to many human diseases, including cancer. The relationship between oxidative stress and cancer is complex since ROS play a double-edged role in cancer development and under therapy response. This paradox represents a great challenge for researchers and needs to be investigated. The articles collected in this Special Issue can help to clarify the role of ROS modulation in cancer prevention and treatment, and to dissect the molecular mechanisms underlying its paradoxical role in order to counteract carcinogenesis or enhance sensitivity to anticancer therapy.
