Si la sculpture bourguignonne est surtout célèbre pour ses grands ensembles romans et l'exceptionnelle statuaire de la fin du Moyen Âge, de nombreux témoignages de l'intense activité artistique que connut la région au xiiie siècle subsistent encore, que la présente étude propose de redécouvrir ou de découvrir grâce à la mise au jour de pièces inédites.À partir d'une étude fine et d'une analyse approfondie de chaque ensemble et élément sculpté, nous découvrons au fil de l'ouvrage les réalisations de deux foyers artistiques majeurs qui se sont succédé sur le territoire bourguignon, l'un autour de l'imposante et prestigieuse église paroissiale Notre-Dame de Dijon et l'autre en plein cœur de l'Auxois.

La chiesa di San Zulian sorge a pochi passi da piazza San Marco forse già nel lontano IX secolo. Interamente ricostruita dopo il 1105, quando un incendio l’aveva letteralmente devastata, l’edificio è di nuovo in rovina nel 1553. Interviene allora il celebre medico Tommaso Rangone da Ravenna, in cerca di un luogo – un altro – che potesse perpetuarne la memoria presso i posteri. Grazie alle ingenti donazioni messe a disposizione dal generoso finanziatore, cui sarà concesso in cambio il diritto di sepoltura presso la cappella maggiore, la facciata e poi l’edificio tutto quanto vengono interamente ricostruiti su progetto di Jacopo Sansovino. Così la statua bronzea di Tommaso, opera di Alessandro Vittoria, con in mano un ramo di salsapariglia e uno di guaiaco (le piante medicinali deputate, secondo le sue scoperte, alla cura della sifilide), finisce per trionfare sul portale maggiore di San Zulian. Se di queste vicende si sono occupati in molti, quasi nulla si sapeva del contesto socio-culturale in cui rinacque uno degli edifici più interessanti della Venezia del Cinquecento. Chi erano i membri della comunità di San Zulian? Chi sedeva tra i banchi del Santissimo Sacramento o della scuola dei Merciai? Chi fra i «zentilhomeni» e «i più i vechi et degni» cittadini della parrocchia era stato prescelto per la carica a vita di procuratore di chiesa? Chi contribuì alle vaste imprese decorative che videro attivi alcuni tra i più importanti pittori, scultori e architetti dell’epoca? E chi tenne le fila di questa gigantesca «opera corale», in cui la pittura sembra talvolta relegata a un rango inferiore? Grazie a uno spoglio meticoloso dell’archivio parrocchiale di San Zulian e grazie ad alcune preziose carte dell’Archivio di Stato di Venezia, grazie a una lettura attenta delle opere d’arte ancora in situ, capaci spesso di rivelare ciò che i documenti tacciono, sono stati ricostruiti nel dettaglio il contesto di alcune delle confraternite presenti in chiesa, il funzionamento…

À l’occasion du 800e anniversaire de la cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims, Willibald Sauerländer prononçait un éloge que ce livre reprend dans une version revue et augmentée. Il se concentre particulièrement sur le souvenir des pratiques sacrées et des cultes, de la vénération des reliques jusqu’au sacre des rois, qui prêtèrent à la cathédrale une intense vie liturgique dans la France prérévolutionnaire. L’auteur évoque successivement le chœur en tant que métaphore iconographique de la Jérusalem céleste, les statues de saints comme guides vers leurs châsses et leurs reliques, et la cathédrale comme lieu de l’onction et du couronnement des souverains français. Le volume se conclut par un chapitre évoquant les sculptures de la cathédrale et leur lien spirituel avec le rituel du culte et des fêtes qui animaient l’église métropolitaine. Anlässlich der 800-Jahrfeier von Notre-Dame in Reims hielt Willibald Sauerländer eine Festrede, die vorliegender Band in einer revidierten und erweiterten Fassung wiedergibt. Im Fokus steht die Erinnerung an die sakralen Bräuche und Kulte von der Reliquienverehrung bis zur Königsweihe, die im vorrevolutionären Frankreich die Kathedrale mit rituellem Leben erfüllten. Nacheinander werden der Chor als bildliches Gleichnis des Himmlischen Jerusalem, die Statuen der Heiligen als Wegweiser zu ihren Schreinen und Reliquien sowie die Kathedrale als Ort der Salbung und Krönung der französischen Herrscher evoziert. Der Band schließt mit einem Nachtrag, der die Skulpturen der Kathedrale in ihrer spirituellen Verbindung mit dem Gottesdienstritus und den Festen evoziert, die die Metropolitankirche belebten.

Tandis que la restauration récente des portails de la cathédrale de Rouen nous invite à redécouvrir un exceptionnel décor sculpté, cette étude propose une approche renouvelée et des clés de compréhension pour en faciliter le « décryptage ». Pourquoi le portail des Libraires se couvre-t-il, à la fin du xiiie siècle, de près de 200 bas-reliefs figurant des animaux fabuleux et des créatures hybrides aux côtés de la Création du monde ou encore d’Adam et Ève ? Comment ce premier « modèle » rouennais a-t-il été repris au cours du xive siècle au portail méridional, celui de la Calende, mais aussi à la primatiale Saint-Jean de Lyon, à l’abbaye Saint-Ouen de Rouen et même au palais des papes en Avignon ? Quels enjeux artistiques, religieux, voire politiques expliquent ce succès à la fois imposant (plus de 860 bas-reliefs) et limité dans le temps (fin xiiie-milieu du xive siècle) ?
