Abstract

The desired properties of surface components include the improvement of different properties, such as aesthetic appearance, oxidation resistance, wear resistance, mechanical properties, electronic or electrical properties, thermal insulation, wear, triboemission and corrosion resistance through barriers. These properties can be enhanced using different methods, such as by adding a coating. Nevertheless, the bulk of the material or substrate cannot be considered independent of the surface treatment. Metal cutting is one of the general machining methods used to achieve high accuracy and productivity for metal parts. The topics of the book "Manufacturing and Surface Engineering" include the full range of surface engineering aspects, i.e., surface integrity, contact mechanics, friction and wear, coatings and surface treatments, multiscale tribology, computational methods, and optimization techniques applied in surface engineering.

Abstract

The intuitive understanding of contact bodies is based on the geometry and adjoining surfaces. A powerful approach to solve the contact problem is to take advantage of the geometry of an analyzed object and describe the problem in the best coordinate system. This book is a systematical analysis of geometrical situations leading to contact pairs: suface-to-surface, curve-to-surface, point-to-surface a.s.o. resultingin the corresponding computational algorithms to solve the contact problem.

Abstract

Based on a formalism to simulate mechanical rigid body systems with plane frictional contacts, an extension to systems with rolling contacts is proposed. A special focus is put on tagential contact compliance. A mathematical convergency proof of the solution of the tangential elastic formulation to the rigid one is proposed.

Abstract

This book contains two sections: Chapters 1-7 deal with contact mechanics, and Chapters 8-13 deal with fracture mechanics. The different contributions of this book will cover the various advanced topics of research. It provides some needed background with respect to contact mechanics, fracture mechanics and the use of finite element methods in both. All the covered chapters of this book are of a theoretical and applied nature, suitable for the researchers of engineering, physics, applied mathematics and mechanics with an interest in computer simulation of contact and fracture problems.

Abstract

The book is a collection of articles on the themes of contact mechanics and non-linear dynamics. In particular, the contribution focus on the mechanisms that lead to interfacial energy dissipation, which is a crucial quantity to determine in order to correctly predict the non-linear dynamic response of mechanical systems. The book is a collection of nine journal papers, among those one editorial, one review paper, and seven articles. The papers consider different dissipative mechanisms, such as Coulomb friction, interfacial adhesion, and viscoelasticity, and study how the system response and stability is influenced by the interfacial interactions. The review paper describes old and recent test rigs for friction and wear measurements, focusing on their performance and range of operability.

Abstract

In present book, an analysis of the literature pertaining to parametric and non-parametric descriptions of surface topography in basics manufacturing processes (e.g., turning, milling, grinding) has been performed. The book focuses on the improvement of machining processes, with particular attention to the functional properties of surfaces, and, also, in the control of process parameters by a selected group of parameters. Here, the specific areas of interest are: surface topography analysis; advanced manufacturing metrology; surface metrology; measurement science; and measurement systems. The proposed approach of the description of surface for the functional properties of surfaces leads to the control of the whole manufacturing process, reduction of production cost by eliminating manufacturing defects and energy consumption, as well as the improvements of surface quality. The study presented in the book is a compendium of knowledge regarding surface metrology and emerging aim in a novel scientific approach.
