Professional criticism and reflection are important elements in both practice and innovation within the health sciences. This anthology presents a wide range of critical perspectives on health care and health science aimed at challenging and encouraging the reader to critical reflection. The emphasis on evidence-based practice can be understood as a critique of the insufficient extent to which health work has been based on the latest scientific findings. The increasing importance of user involvement in treatment, service design and research can largely be seen as the result of decades of criticism of paternalistism and self-interest within the professions. In the same way, commitment to public health and preventive care can be understood as a critique of a disease-focused healthcare system that is only engaged once disease and/or injury are present, rather than preventing them. Evidence-based practice, user involvement and public health work can thus appear as hard-fought and desirable results of critical scientific activity. So why subject such "obvious benefits" to even more criticism? With this anthology we will demonstrate why we continually need to challenge what we take for granted, and show with examples how this can be done. The target audience for the book is researchers and educators in various health sciences, as well as students at the Masters degree and PhD levels. Professional practitioners will also find this book of interest.

The article collection of this Special Issue reprint covers a wide range of neurorehabilitation modalities, although they only represent a small proportion of the whole scene. We trust that they will assist clinicians in performing evidence-based interventions and illuminate the necessity of multidisciplinary collaboration. Furthermore, they share an important motivational drive, that is, the inspiration to move forward to a new era where medical, basic research, engineering, and high-tech advances can develop more efficacious approaches, combining neuromodulation techniques under sophisticated neuroimaging guidance. These can be widely and remotely applied to all people that need them, organized under a fresh "patient-centric" approach, with home-based and tele-rehabilitation protocols replacing long stays in medical centers.

"The First Episode Psychosis Services Fidelity Scale (FEPS-FS 1.0) is used to assess the degree to which mental health teams deliver specialized care to people experiencing a first episode psychosis. Comprising of a range of evidence-based practices, FEPS-FS 1.0 can be used as an outcome measure for implementation research or as a quality measure for assessing structure and process indicators in health care. First Episode Psychosis Services Fidelity Scale Manual lays out FEPS-FS 1.0 and provides a practical guide for scoring an FEPS program against the criteria set out in the fidelity scale. It is designed to increase the reliability and consistency of ratings across different sites and assessors. The book includes the full First Episode Psychosis Services Fidelity Scale, a definition and rational for each component of FEPS-FS 1.0, a list of data sources to inform the ratings for each component, and decision rules to help score each component correctly. It also includes site interview data-collecting tools including interview guides, a health record abstraction guide, and a site fidelity assessment preparation guide."-- Provided by publisher.
