Die moderne sprachwissenschaftliche Forschung nutzt in zunehmender Weise digitale Forschungsinfrastrukturen und Informationssysteme. Diese Entwicklung begann um die Jahrtausendwende und beschleunigt sich seither. Der Band thematisiert nationale und europäische Infrastrukturverbünde und verschiedene Sprachressourcen aus der germanistischen Sprachwissenschaft, die über digitale Infrastrukturen auffindbar, zugreifbar und (wieder-)verwendbar sind.

Making a valuable contribution to a rapidly growing phase of linguistic science, the editors bring together enlightening case studies which demonstrate the varied use of computation and computers in the solution of problems in linguistis. Computational approaches to specific problems in formal languages, data processing, comparative linguistics, automatic parsing and translation, automatic verification procedures, and automated instruction are thoroughly analyzed. The book, dedicated to the history of the mathematization-computerization of the language sciences, is in the area of the history and epistemology of the language sciences. It pertains to history of present time. Two steps can be distinguished : machine translation in the 1950s and large computerized corpora in the 1990s with the unprecedented development of computers. Early Machine Translation was devised as a war technology originating in war sciences, and was intended to provide mass translations for the strategic purposes of the cold war. Linguistics, which did not belong to war sciences, did not play any role at the beginning of Machine Translation. The book attempts to show, in a comparative approach, how the languages sciences have integrated that technology to engage in the process of the second mathematization of language which can be called the computational…

The annual workshop on multiword expressions takes place since 2001 in conjunction with major computational linguistics conferences and attracts the attention of an ever-growing community working on a variety of languages, linguistic phenomena and related computational processing issues. MWE 2017 took place in Valencia, Spain, and represented a vibrant panorama of the current research landscape on the computational treatment of multiword expressions, featuring many high-quality submissions. Furthermore, MWE 2017 included the first shared task on multilingual identification of verbal multiword expressions. The shared task, with extended communal work, has developed important multilingual resources and mobilised several research groups in computational linguistics worldwide. This book contains extended versions of selected papers from the workshop. Authors worked hard to include detailed explanations, broader and deeper analyses, and new exciting results, which were thoroughly reviewed by an internationally renowned committee. We hope that this distinctly joint effort will provide a meaningful and useful snapshot of the multilingual state of the art in multiword expressions modelling and processing, and will be a point point of reference for future work.

This book presents groundbreaking robotic experiments on how and why spatial language evolves. It provides detailed explanations of the origins of spatial conceptualization strategies, spatial categories, landmark systems and spatial grammar by tracing the interplay of environmental conditions, communicative and cognitive pressures. The experiments discussed in this book go far beyond previous approaches in grounded language evolution. For the first time, agents can evolve not only particular lexical systems but also evolve complex conceptualization strategies underlying the emergence of category systems and compositional semantics. Moreover, many issues in cognitive science, ranging from perception and conceptualization to language processing, had to be dealt with to instantiate these experiments, so that this book contributes not only to the study of language evolution but to the investigation of the cognitive bases of spatial language as well.

This collected volume brings together the contributions of several humanities scholars who focus on the evolution of language in the digital era. The first part of the volume explores general aspects of humanities and linguistics in the digital environment. The second part focuses on language and translation and includes topics that discuss the digital translation policy, new technologies and specialised translation, online resources for terminology management, translation of online advertising, or subtitling. The last part of the book focuses on language teaching and learning and addresses the changes, challenges and perspectives of didactics in the age of technology. Each contribution is divided into several sections that present the state of the art and the methodology used, and discuss the results and perspectives of the authors. The book is recommended to scholars, professionals, students and anyone interested in the changes within the humanities in conjunction with technological innovation or in the ways language is adapting to the challenges of today's digitized world. This open access book provides new methodological and theoretical insights into temporal reference and its linguistic expression, from a cross-linguistic experimental corpus pragmatics approach. Verbal tenses, in general, and more specifically the categories of tense, grammatical and lexical aspect are treated as cohesion ties contributing to the temporal coherence of a discourse, as well as to the cognitive temporal coherence of the mental representations built in the language comprehension process. As such, it investigates the phenomenon of temporal reference at the interface between corpus linguistics, theoretical linguistics and pragmatics, experimental pragmatics, psycholinguistics, natural language processing and machine translation. .
