Abstract

Lead continues to amaze us in a variety of ways. The more we learn, the more we are amazed, or more like it, obsessed! Even though we might think that we know the element quite well, the fact is that more research must be conducted to support its subtle behaviors and effects. The most obvious aspect is the effects of lead on health. Because lead is still in use today, we have to understand the effects of lead on our metabolisms. In addition, more and more compounds of lead have been continuously synthesized and their properties and behaviors are required with the help from a variety of scientific disciplines. To provide information for newcomers, especially students or even the public, the overview of lead effects has been included in this book. Despite the variety of lead aspects the book might seem to contain, at least some topics should suit readers? interests. The rest, meaning the contents for new books, depends on how fast you can take the benefits out of this book!

Abstract

This open access book gathers original contributions focused on the transition of the European steel industry to Industry 4.0. It not only investigates how Industry 4.0 can enhance productivity, cost-saving, and sustainability in the steel industry but also helps to comprehend its broad consequences on employment, education and training, human resources, economic resilience and decarbonisation. The content engages with the international debate on Industry 4.0 through the lens of the steel industry from a multidisciplinary perspective. It encourages a scientifically grounded critical approach and includes contributions from humanities and technical disciplines, with a focus on the social dimensions of the phenomenon. This book draws strength from up-to-date international research projects and adopts a strong industry-based perspective, providing a thorough description and analysis of the state of the art of the European steel industry. It also analyzes the trends, outcomes, opportunities, and criticalities arising with the transition to the Industry 4.0 paradigm. The book is primarily based on the results of the European Steel Skills Agenda (ESSA) skills alliance project co-funded by the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union and supported by the European Steel Technology Platform (ESTEP). This is an open access book.

Abstract

Post-Transition Metals compiles information on synthesis, properties, characterization, and potential applications of post-transition metals such as indium and gallium. These metals are important for their optical, structural, morphological, and electronic properties. This book provides an overview of the history as well as the physical, structural, optical, and chemical properties of post-transition elements. It also discusses methods for the detection and separation of these metals, including special methods for determining their presence in industrial and organometallic products. The information contained herein is useful for physicists, researchers, chemists, materials engineers, and students.

Abstract

Heavy metals are a group of metals and metalloids that includes transition metals, lanthanides, and actinides. When released into water, these elements have toxic effects on water quality and surface sediments, affecting environmental parameters such as pH and temperature. Therefore, metals that are harmful to aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems pose a significant threat to plants, animals, and human health. As such, there is increased interest in mitigating the harmful environmental impacts of heavy metals. This book provides a comprehensive overview of heavy metals, their impacts on water, soil, food crops, and cosmetics, and techniques for their remediation. It is organized into three sections: "Heavy Metals and Their Effects on the Environment," "Evaluation of Heavy Metals and Their Risks to Irrigation Water," and "Remediation of Heavy Metals."

Abstract

The combination of low density, high strength, and good corrosion resistance makes intermetallics promising for structural applications, especially at high temperatures and under severe environments. These materials have also potential for functional applications since some intermetallic phases have unique properties, such as shape memory or thermo electric effect. As a result of the increasing demand for novel/advanced materials with improved properties, recent years have been marked by the return of intermetallics. In this book, 17 papers have been published covering important aspects related to intermetallics, in particular transition metal aluminides. Other materials, such as silicides, NiTi shape memory alloys and Ti-6Al-4V, were also investigated. Composites involving intermetallics were the subject of two papers, while two papers were dedicated to metallic glasses. Processing and joining of intermetallics, their mechanical properties and oxidation/corrosion behaviour, phase transformations involving intermetallics, modelling and numerical simulation have been focused on these papers. The simulation and experimental works carried out allowed understanding the relation between microstructure and properties of the intermetallics studied, aiming at their use as structural materials at high and ultra-high temperatures, as well as in aerospace/aeronautic, automobile, electronic, tribological, and biomedical applications. Whatever the application, joining of intermetallics to other materials is of paramount importance as is reflected in this book that contains several papers dedicated to this topic.
