Abstract

The subject of this piece of work is the combination of the modal particles ja and doch, halt and eben as well as doch and auch. Based on empirical investigation (acceptability studies, corpus searches) and a formal modelling of the meaning of the single particles as well as their sequences within the discourse model by Farkas & Bruce (2010), this work proposes an iconic explanation of the observed sequencing preferences. It is argued that the preferred sequences show the unmarked orders. However, one should act on the assumption that marked sequences exist as well. These are less acceptable, occur more infrequently and are restricted to certain contexts. These contexts are identified and integrated into the explanation of the preferences.

Abstract

Resumen (revisado) The tourism research article (RA) has not been the focus of many studies. This volume offers a description of the genre in terms of section, besides an analysis of the most used language features in each section of the RA. Among these are the presence of modal verbs. Precisely, the goal of this work is to describe their use, meaning and functions in a corpus of the "introduction" and "conclusion" sections of the RA in tourist studies. The compilations included texts from leading journals in the area. The method of inquiry includes corpus linguistics tools to analyze texts as well as specific examples to show how these forms behave in the RAs. The analysis of context is also essential in order to identify the exact meanings of modal verbs, and for that reason visual inspection of each sample is mandatory. The discussion of the evidence obtained is accounted for by studies in the domain of functional linguistics. The conclusions show that formal variation exists in the introduction and the conclusion sections. This also applies to their meanings. Dynamic modality is attested to be more recurrent in the introductions and epistemic modality is preferred in the concluding sections. The functions performed by these modals are varied to feature interpersonal and textual cues in the elaboration of meaning in the RA.

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Abstract

Clinical neurologic examination remains the cornerstone of modern neurology. However, it provides rather limited information when facing critically ill neurologic patients, especially those with altered mental status. The underlying mechanisms might include nonconvulsive seizures, cerebral hemodynamic failure, brain edema, delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI), intracranial hypertension, etc.. Most of them are invisible but detectable. Integration of various monitoring and evaluation methods have been applied in neurologic intensive care unit (NICU), to interpret electric, biochemical and physiological changes of the brain into objective data, which help physicians select patients suitable for specific interference, recognize the treatable disorders, assess the response to treatment and prevent secondary injuries. Because some progress has been made lately, it is important for clinicians in NICU to update the concepts and knowledge of multimodality monitoring and evaluation, as well as to explore what is still needed in modern NICU. In this Research Topic, we collect articles regarding monitoring methods/techniques and their application in common neurocritical diseases.

Abstract

While most natural languages rely on speech, humans can spontaneously generate comparable linguistic systems that utilize manual gestures. This collection of papers examines the interaction between natural language and its phonetic vessels - human speech or manual gestures. We seek to identify what linguistic aspects are invariant across signed and spoken languages, and determine how the choice of the phonetic vessel shapes language structure, its processing and its neural implementation. We welcome rigorous empirical studies from a wide variety of perspectives, ranging from behavioral studies to brain analyses, diverse ages (from infants to adults), and multiple languages - both conventional and emerging home signs and sign languages.
