This paper studies whether the policies that, over the past decades, liberalized bankingsystems around the world have resulted in deeper credit markets. To measure banking sectorreforms we use a new index that tracks policy changes in five separate areas for 91 countriesover 1973-2005. We find that reforms have led to financial deepening, but only in countrieswith institutions that place checks and balances on political power. We interpret this asevidence of a complementarity between financial sector reforms and political institutions thatprotect property rights. Other country characteristics do not seem to significantly influencethe effect of banking reforms on financial development.

Recent studies on the relationship between financial development and poverty have been inconclusive. Some claim that, by allowing more entrepreneurs to obtain financing, financial development improves the allocation of capital, which has a particularly large impact on the poor. Others argue that it is primarily the rich and politically connected who benefit from improvements in the financial system. This paper looks at a sample of 37 countries in sub-Saharan Africa from 1992 through 2006. Its results suggest that financial deepening could narrow income inequality and reduce poverty, and that stronger property rights reinforce these effects. Interest rate and lending liberalization alone could, however, be detrimental to the poor if not accompanied by institutional reforms, in particular stronger property rights and wider access to creditor information.

Intellectuele eigendomsrechten, zoals o.a. octrooien (patenten), auteursrechten, en merkenrechten, zijn recent grondig gewijzigd of staan op het punt gewijzigd te worden. Daarom is het belangrijk om een correcte inleiding aan te schaffen. Dit dossier behandelt de relatie tussen de intellectuele eigendomsrechten en het internet. Per categorie geven we eerst een theoretische inleiding. Daarna behandelen we een aantal concrete problemen door de theoretische principes erop toe te passen.
