Die für die moderne chinesische Geschichte charakteristische Verbindung von Kultur und Politik gewinnt in der Bewegung des 4. Mai 1919 ihren ersten prägnanten Ausdruck. The union of culture and politics that is so characteristic of modern Chinese history gained its first concise expression in the May Fourth Movement of 1919. The essays in this edited volume examine the exchange of ideas between China and Germany from various perspectives, illuminating how the clash between Chinese tradition and Western modernity accompanied and often inspired the movement.

Ökologische Modernisierung gilt als Leitprinzip zeitgemäßer Umweltpolitik. Anhand von Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) fragt Timmo Krüger nach den aktuellen Dynamiken in den Kämpfen um die Hegemonie in der internationalen Klimapolitik. Er zeigt: Da CCS-Technologien auf der fossilen und zentralisierten Energieinfrastruktur basieren, spitzt sich hier die Frage zu, inwieweit es zur adäquaten Bearbeitung der ökologischen Krise einer umfassenden Transformation gesellschaftlicher Strukturen bedarf. Scholars usually trace the emergence of modern Hinduism to cosmopolitan reform movements, producing accounts that overemphasize the centrality of elite religion and the influence of Western ideas and models. In this study, the author considers religious change on the margins of colonialism by looking at an important local figure, the Tamil Shaiva poet and mystic Ramalinga Swami (1823-1874). Weiss narrates a history of Hindu modernization that demonstrates the transformative role of Hindu ideas, models, and institutions, making this text essential for scholarly audiences of South Asian history, religious studies, Hindu studies, and South Asian studies.

Cet ouvrage de « Mélanges » en l'honneur de Gilbert Étienne, professeur à l'IUHEI et à l'IUED de Genève de 1959 à 1996, rassemble une série d'articles rédigés pour l'occasion par un groupe de ses collègues et amis. Il est consacré à l'étude du lien étroit existant entre les traditions paysannes et les processus de modernisation agricole dans les sociétés rurales des pays en développement, une des questions au coeur de toute l'oeuvre de cet auteur prolifique. Logiquement, l'Asie occupe la majeure part de ce recueil, Gilbert Sahab, comme il est connu en Inde, ayant d'abord et surtout été un infatigable arpenteur de campagnes asiatiques. Mais, par souci de comparaison, un certain nombre de contributions sont aussi dévolues aux cas de sociétés rurales d'Afrique et d'Amérique Latine, qui sont loin de lui être restées étrangères. Ainsi, la collection de ces « Mélanges », usage traditionnel par lequel une communauté scientifique rend hommage à ses membres les plus éminents, espère refléter l'immense talent d'un chercheur hors pair, qui a su faire le meilleur usage de l'analyse comparée. Elle veut aussi honorer un enseignant exemplaire qui a formé plusieurs générations d'étudiants aux problèmes du développement, champ d'études nouveau dont il a été l'un des pionniers en Europe et noble cause pour laquelle il s'est battu avec passion.

This book scrutinizes the body as represented in literature of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in and around East Asia: China, Korea, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia. The scope of the volume is thematic: saturated bodies, repressed bodies, reappropriated bodies, trans-formed bodies. The methodology combines as many disciplines as possible: narratology, anthropology, psychoanalysis, cultural history of the body, etc. History’s vicissitudes of history in the area concerned do not erase old conceptions of the body, as well as related discourses and legends, but the shock of modernization splits the body between an anatomized one, in search of identity mostly repressed by the nation, and a virtual one, generated by the cyberspace. Literature most often accounts for the phenomenon as if the autonomy of the body, still at stake, conditioned the so-called autonomy of writing. Two tendencies also appear in writing: a classical one, still restoring the body's deficiencies and excesses ; an experimental one, which manages to renew the link of the body with an alienating world, even if that implies breaking the language. An experience that is quite similar, all in all, to that of the West. A number of unpublished and translated extracts illustrate the whole.
