Abstract

Focusing on the future of tourism, Sustainable Tourism Dialogues in Africa is inclusive of experienced and emerging researchers, as well as incorporating local stakeholders in the tourism industry: architects, tourism operators, sustainable tourism lobbyists, policy makers, archaeologists, and geographers. The editors are frontline sustainable tourism advocates in Africa, and the book’s thematic content is derived from 30 inter-university seminars on sustainable tourism hosted by Sustainable Travel & Tourism Agenda Kenya from 2017 to November 2019. These seminars involved the participation of 17 universities in Kenya, tourism operators, conservationists, developmentalists, investors, policy makers, and students.Every chapter is a voice projecting aspirations for the responsible management of tourism in Africa and promoting the ideals of sustainable tourism that young people in Africa advocate for the industry’s future. In so doing, the authors pinpoint the necessary actions for bringing about transformations in sustainable development of tourism. The book thus seeks to encourage debate, while facilitating the development of both theoretical and practical foundations for managing tourism sustainably in Africa.

Abstract

The central focus of this book is the interaction between law and tourism, with the view to attaining sustainable tourism. The book achieves its goal by approaching law and tourism from various angles. On the one hand, sustainable tourism is put in a broader context by, for example, outlining the principles and philosophy of sustainable tourism, and on the other by explaining how principles of sustainable tourism can be taught through educational programs in developing countries. The question therefore arises as to how a 'Global Code' could also be integrated in legal teaching. There are, more

Abstract

Tourism is the world's largest industry, and ecotourism is rapidly emerging as its fastest growing segment. As interest in nature travel increases, so does concern for conservation of the environment and the well-being of local peoples and cultures. Appalachia seems an ideal destination for ecotourists, with its rugged mountains, uniquely diverse forests, wild rivers, and lively arts culture. And ecotourism promises much for the region: protecting the environment while bringing income to disadvantaged communities. But can these promises be kept? Ecotourism in Appalachia examines both the pote

Abstract

Around the world, ecotourism has been hailed as a panacea: a way to fund conservation and scientific research, protect fragile ecosystems, benefit communities, promote development in poor countries, instill environmental awareness and a social conscience in the travel industry, satisfy and educate discriminating tourists, and, some claim, foster world peace. Although "green" travel is being aggressively marketed as a "win-win" solution for the Third World, the environment, the tourist, and the travel industry, the reality is far more complex, as the author reports in this book. The first edition of this title, originally published in 1998, was among the first books on the subject. For years it defined the debate on ecotourism: is it possible for developing nations to benefit economically from tourism while simultaneously helping to preserve pristine environments? This second edition provides new answers to this vital question. A comprehensive overview of worldwide ecotourism, this book shows how both the concept and the reality have evolved over more than twenty-five years. Here the author revisits the six nations she profiled in the first edition, the Galapagos Islands, Costa Rica, Tanzania, Zanzibar, Kenya, and South Africa, and adds a new chapter on the United States. She examines the growth of ecotourism within each country's tourism strategy, its political system, and its changing economic policies. Her case studies highlight the economic and cultural impacts of expanding tourism on indigenous populations as well as on ecosystems, based on information and her experiences as a reporter who lived in East Africa and Central America for nearly twenty years. She has led the International Ecotourism Society and founded a new center to lead the way to responsible ecotourism.
