Current applied linguistic research generally supports the adoption of interdisciplinary approaches in education with the objective of enhancing learners' progress and teachers' practices. In this spirit, this edited volume explores the issue of cross-curricular learning and teaching from a wider perspective. The twenty-three papers collected here are categorised in four thematic units, all of which, however, share a common feature: they focus on interdisciplinary learning and promote the integration of knowledge and skills from various subject areas. As such, all the papers brought together i

For about two decades, say Johnson and Pace, the discussion of how to address prose style in teaching college writing has been stuck, with style standing in as a proxy for other stakes in the theory wars. The traditional argument is evidently still quite persuasive to some-that teaching style is mostly a matter of teaching generic conventions through repetition and practice. Such a position usually presumes the traditional view of composition as essentially a service course, one without content of its own. On the other side, the shortcomings of this argument have been much discu

Laura Wilder fills a gap in the scholarship on writing in the disciplines and writing across the curriculum with this thorough study of the intersections between scholarly literary criticism and undergraduate writing in introductory literature courses. Rhetorical Strategies and Genre Conventions in Literary Studies is the first examination of rhetorical practice in the research and teaching of literary study and a detailed assessment of the ethics and efficacy of explicit instruction in the rhetorical strategies and genre conventions of the discipline. Using rhetorical analysis,

Emancipatory Movements in Composition provides an overview of the four major disciplines that have, for the last ten years, influenced and guided the direction of composition studies. Drawing on contemporary social and rhetorical theory, this is the first cultural studies text deeply informed by classical rhetoric, feminism, and postcolonial studies. Readable and engaging, it merges theory and pedagogy, providing a rubric for understanding critical pedagogy, neosophistic rhetoric, service-learning, and ethnographic research. This self-reflexive and critical book examines the ethical dimensions of partaking in liberatory learning practices in the contemporary composition classroom.

In one of the few book-length studies of a major post-secondary writing-across-the-curriculum initiative from concept to implementation, Writing-Intensive traces the process of preparation for new writing requirements across the undergraduate curriculum at Simon Fraser University, a mid-sized Canadian research university. As faculty members across campus were selected to pilot writing-intensive courses, and as administrators and committees adjusted the process toward full implementation, planners grounded their pedagogy in genre theory-a new approach for many non-composition facult

"The classical sciences were organised around academic disciplines but knowledge production today is burgeoning and increasingly interdisciplinary, specialised; it is also distributed across a variety of societal sectors and increasingly involves interactions with extra-academic fields and transdisciplinary methods which focus on solving societal challenges. As a result, the notion of liberal arts and humanities within Western research universities is undergoing profound transformations. In Mapping Frontier Research in the Humanities, the contributors explore this transformative process. What are the implications, both for the modes of research and for intellectual leadership in higher education? Based on multidimensional methodologies for mapping knowledge diversity, the v. outlines reasons for optimism on the potentials as well as concerns regarding imbalances in the current hybrid university system. Drawing on a number of case studies and conceptual-empirical mappings of the humanities, the perceived divide between the classical humanities and 'post-academic' modes of research is critically discussed. Avoiding simple mechanical metrics, the contributors suggest a heuristic appreciation of different types of impact and styles of reasoning in the humanities. From this perspective, a more composite picture of human culture, language and history emerges from humanities research. It goes beyond the picture of rational agents, and situates human interaction in more complex landscapes of collective identities, networks, and constraints that open for new forms of intellectual leadership in the 21st century."--

In Disrupting Boundaries in Education and Research, six educational researchers explore together the potentialities of transdisciplinary research that de-centres human behaviour and gives materiality its due in the making of educational worlds. The book presents accounts of what happens when researchers think and act with new materiality and post-human theories to disrupt boundaries such as self and other, human and non-human, representation and objectivity. Each of the core chapters works with different new materiality concepts to disrupt these boundaries and to consider the emotive, sensory, nuanced, material and technological aspects of learning in diverse settings, such as in mathematics and learning to swim, discovering the bio-products of 'eco-sustainable' building, making videos and contending with digital government and its alienating effects. When humans are no longer at the centre of the unfolding world it is both disorienting and exhilarating. This book is an invitation to continue along these paths.

Michael D. Fowler presents an interdisciplinary approach to investigating the sound world of traditional Japanese gardens by drawing from the diverse fields of semiotics, acoustic ecology, philosophy, mathematical modelling, architecture, music, landscape theory and acoustic analysis. Using projects - ranging from data-visualisations, immersive sound installations, algorithmically generated meta-gardens and proto-architectural form finding missions - as creative paradigms, the book offers a new framework for artistic inquiry in which the sole objective is the generation of new knowledge through the act of spatial thinking.
