Abstract

The power of computer-generated images is everywhere. Computer graphics has pervaded our lives to such an extent that sometimes we don't even realize that an image we are watching is artificial. Comprehensive, accessible and engaging, The Computer Graphics Manual presents a broad overview of computer graphics, its history and its pioneers, and the hardware tools it employs. Covering a substantial number of concepts and algorithms, this invaluable text/reference describes the techniques, approaches, and algorithms at the core of this field. Emphasis is placed on practical design and implementation, highlighting how graphics software works, and explaining how current computer graphics can generate and display realistic-looking curves, surfaces, and objects. The use of mathematics is mostly non-rigorous, with the necessary mathematical background introduced in the Appendixes. Volume 1 contains chapters on basic techniques, transformations and projections, and curves and surfaces. Volume 2 contains chapters on advanced techniques, image compression, and graphics devices. Topics and features: Includes numerous figures, examples and exercises (with solutions) throughout the text Covers the history, basic concepts, and techniques used in computer graphics Discusses the key two- and three-dimensional transformations, in addition to the main types of projections Presents an extensive selection of methods, algorithms, and techniques employed to construct curves and surfaces Examines advanced techniques in computer graphics, with chapters on the nature and properties of light and color, graphics standards and graphics file formats, and fractals Explores the principles of image compression, focusing on orthogonal and subband (wavelet) transforms Describes the important input/output graphics devices, and explains their operations This practical and expansive reference is an essential resource for professionals in computer science, engineering, and other disciplines involved in the generation and processing of digital images. Abstract

The focus from most Virtual Reality (VR) systems lies mainly on the visual immersion of the user. But the emphasis only on the visual perception is insufficient for some applications as the user is limited in his interactions within the VR. Therefore the textbook presents the principles and theoretical background to develop a VR system that is able to create a link between physical simulations and haptic rendering which requires update rates of 1,kHz for the force feedback. Special attention is given to the modeling and computation of contact forces in a two-finger grasp of textiles. Addressing further the perception of small scale surface properties like roughness, novel algorithms are presented that are not only able to consider the highly dynamic behaviour of textiles but also capable of computing the small forces needed for the tactile rendering at the contact point. Final analysis of the entire VR system is being made showing the problems and the solutions found in the work.

Abstract

This volume reports the proceedings of the 15th Italian Workshop on Neural Nets WIRN04. The workshop, held in Perugia from September 14th to 17th 2004 has been jointly organized by the International Institute for Advanced Scienti?c Studies Eduardo R. Caianiello (IIASS) and the Societ` a Italiana Reti Neuroniche (SIREN). This year the Conference has constituted a joint event of three associations: Associazione Italiana per l'Intelligenza Arti?ciale (AIIA), Gruppo Italiano di Ricercatori in Pattern Recognition (GIRPR), Societ` a Italiana Reti Neuroniche (SIREN) within the conference CISI-04 (Conferenza Italiana sui Sistemi Int- ligenti - 2004) combining the three associations' annual meetings. The aim was to examine Intelligent Systems as a joint topic, pointing out synergies and d- ferences between the various approaches. The volume covers this matter from the Neural Networks and related ?elds perspective. It contains invited review papers and selected original contri- tions presented in either oral or poster sessions by both Italian and foreign - searchers. The contributions have been assembled, for reading convenience, into ?ve sections. The ?rst two collect papers from pre-WIRN workshops focused on Computational Intelligence Methods for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics, and Computational Intelligence on Hardware, respectively. The remaining sections concern Architectures and Algorithms, Models, and Applications. The Editors would like to thank the invited speakers and all the contributors whosehighlyquali?edpapershelpedthesuccessoftheWorkshop. Finally, special thanks go to the referees for their accurate work.

Abstract

Intelligent Computing Everywhere reflects the current perception in various fields that modern computing applications are becoming increasingly challenged in terms of complexity and intelligence. It investigates the relevance and relationship artificial intelligence maintains with "modern strands of computing" i.e. pervasive computing and ambient intelligence, bioinformatics, neuroinformatics, computing and the mind, non-classical computing and novel computing models, as well as DNA computing and quantum computing. Each subject is examined from two main viewpoints, the first provides a state of the art introduction to a field such as DNA computing and the second investigates the subject from an artificial intelligence perspective.

Abstract

As the speed, capabilities, and economic advantages of modern digital devices c- tinue to grow, the need for ef?cient information processing, especially in computer - sion and graphics, dramatically increases. Growth in these ?elds stimulated by eme- ing applications has been both in concepts and techniques. New ideas, concepts and techniques are developed, presented, discussed and evaluated, subsequently expanded or abandoned. Such processes take place in different forms in various ?elds of the c- puter science and technology. The objectives of the ICCVG are: presentation of current research topics and d- cussions leading to the integration of the community engaged in machine vision and computer graphics, carrying out and supporting research in the ?eld and ?nally pro- tion of new applications. The ICCVG is a continuation of the former International Conference on Computer Graphics and Image Processing called GKPO, held in Poland every second year in May since 1990, organized by the Institute of Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw and chaired by the Editor of the International Journal of Machine Graphics and Vision, Prof. Wojciech S. Mokrzycki.

Abstract

¢ Motivation It is our dream to understand the principles of animals' remarkable ability for adaptive motion and to transfer such abilities to a robot. Up to now, mechanisms for generation and control of stereotyped motions and adaptive motions in well-known simple environments have been formulated to some extentandsuccessfullyappliedtorobots. However, principlesofadaptationto variousenvironmentshavenotyetbeenclari?ed,andautonomousadaptation remains unsolved as a seriously di?cult problem in robotics. Apparently, the ability of animals and robots to adapt in a real world cannot be explained or realized by one single function in a control system and mechanism. That is, adaptation in motion is induced at every level from thecentralnervoussystemtothemusculoskeletalsystem. Thus, weorganized the International Symposium on Adaptive Motion in Animals and Machines(AMAM)forscientistsandengineersconcernedwithadaptation onvariouslevelstobebroughttogethertodiscussprinciplesateachleveland to investigate principles governing total systems. ¢ History AMAM started in Montreal (Canada) in August 2000. It was organized by H. Kimura (Japan), H. Witte (Germany), G. Taga (Japan), and K. Osuka (Japan), who had agreed that having a small symposium on motion control, with people from several ?elds coming together to discuss speci?c issues, was worthwhile. Those four organizing committee members determined the scope of AMAM as follows.
