Abstract

Focusing on the transition from the production of squared timber to that of milled lumber and, finally, wood pulp, Gaudreau traces the constant depletion of the resource and the companies' resulting, inexorable push westward from Quebec into Ontario - an economic migration that led to the establishment of significant francophone communities across northern Ontario. He shows how recent generations of Quebec historians have failed to provide adequate historical explanations because of an overly exclusive focus on Quebec. Gaudreau's work provides an important historiographic corrective, showing that the history of Quebec is part of a complex fabric that, like the forests themselves, does not recognize provincial boundaries. Detailed annual data on the volume of principal forest products produced from Crown lands in Quebec and Ontario during the second half of the nineteenth century compiled systematically for the first time form the backbone of this study. Based on these data Gaudreau describes and clarifies the timing, scale, and significance of transitions in forest outputs as spruce joined pine as the principal type of wood logged and as milled lumber and subsequently pulp wood joined, and eventually replaced, square timber as the key product. The book addresses the implications of resource depletion and the economic and historical changes in the forestry industry, including the transition from a commercial and artisanal process to an industrial process and the implications this had for colonization and migration.

Abstract

In this unprecedented effort to gather and share knowledge of the Native American practice of creating, designating, and making use of marker trees, an arborist, an anthropologist, and a Comanche tribal officer have merged their wisdom, research, and years of personal experience to create Comanche Marker Trees of Texas. A genuine marker tree is a rare find-only six of these natural and cultural treasures have been officially documented in Texas and recognized by the Comanche Nation. The latter third of the book highlights the characteristics of these six marker trees and gives an up-to-date history of each, displaying beautiful photographs of these long-standing, misshapen, controversial symbols that have withstood the tests of time and human activity. Thoroughly researched and richly illustrated with maps, drawings, and photographs of trees, this book offers a close look at the unique cultural significance of these living witnesses to our history and provides detailed guidelines on how to recognize, research, and report potential marker tree candidates.

Abstract

Wars in the Woods examines the conflicts that have developed over the preservation of forests in America, and how government agencies and advocacy groups have influenced the management of forests and their resources for more than a century. Samuel Hays provides an analysis of manipulations of conservation law that have touched off a battle between what he terms "ecological forestry" and "commodity forestry." Hays also reveals the influence of the wood products industry, and the training of U.S. Forest Service to value tree species marketable as wood products, as the primary forces behind forestry policy since the Forest Management Act of 1897. Wars in the Woods gives a comprehensive account of the many grassroots and scientific organizations that have emerged since then to combat the lumber industry and other special interest groups and work to promote legislation to protect forests, parks, and wildlife habitats. It also offers a review of current forestry practices, citing the recent Federal easing of protections as a challenge to the progress made in the last third of the twentieth century. Hays describes an increased focus on ecological forestry in areas such as biodiversity, wildlife habitat, structural diversity, soil conservation, watershed management, native forests, and old growth. He provides a framework for the critical assessment of forest management policies and the future study and protection of forest resources.

Abstract

"This book offers a historical perspective on the global proliferation of protected forest areas and productive timber plantations. It argues that a forest management divergence--the separation of wood production from the protection of forests--has occurred during the twentieth century as a result of globalisation. The book shows how plantations and protected areas evolved from, and then undermined, an earlier integrated forest management system, the conservation model, that sought both to produce timber and to conserve the environment. To trace these changes, the book reassesses the historical development of the science and profession of forestry in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Europe; offers an original interpretation on the twentieth-century creation of timber plantations in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and Australia; and establishes how the controversies over deforestation led to the establishment of protected areas. The book concludes with the suggestion that to solve the problems associated with the forest management divergence scientists, policy makers and environmentalists must better integrate protective and productive aspects of forest management. To successfully achieve this integration requires a deeper awareness of history"--Publisher's description.

Abstract

Part armchair travelogue, part guide book, this projected three-volume series-divided into the western, central, and eastern United States-will introduce readers to all 155 national forests across the country. This Land is the only comprehensive field guide that describes the natural features, wildernesses, scenic drives, campgrounds, and hiking trails of our national forests, many of which-while little known and sparsely visited-boast features as spectacular as those found in our national parks and monuments. Each entry includes logistical information about size and location, facilities, attractions, and associated wilderness areas. For about half of the forests, Robert H. Mohlenbrock has provided sidebars on the biological or geological highlights, drawn from the "This Land" column that he has written for Natural History magazine since 1984. Superbly illustrated with color photographs, botanical drawings, and maps, this book is loaded with information, clearly written, and easy to use. This volume covers national forests in: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin
