Abstract

Written cases provide a thoughtful review of modern management and contemplation of the literature, much more so than even a case presentation without the patient. As a result, in recent years the written or prepared case has become the ideal forum for demonstrating how to manage a medical problem to the greatest benefit of the patient. In A Case-Based Guide to Clinical Endocrinology, distinguished clinicians provide stimulating instruction and insights into a wide variety of endocrine subjects, teaching readers modern management of the conditions described and offering targeted entry into the literature. Importantly, many of the important elements in the current curriculum for clinical endocrine training as recommended by the Association of Program Directors in Clinical Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism are covered in this text. To reinforce learning and retention of knowledge, each author has also provided multiple choice questions following the case studies. Students, residents, fellows, and practitioners will find these examples to be an efficient way to review their understanding and increase their skills and abilities in patient investigation and management. In all, A Case-Based Guide to Clinical Endocrinology offers a comprehensive volume of concise case-studies that will prove to be of significant importance to all clinicians practicing in this field.

Abstract

In The Diabetic Foot: Medical and Surgical Management, 3rd Edition, a distinguished panel of clinicians provides a thorough update of the significant improvements in knowledge surrounding the pathogenesis of diabetic foot problems, as well as the optimal healthcare treatment for this debilitating condition.  The authors, many practicing at the famous Joslin-Beth Israel Deaconess Foot Center, again illuminate the successful new multidisciplinary approach now clearly required for the successful treatment of diabetic foot.  Drawing on the experiences of diabetologists, podiatrists, vascular surgeons, infectious disease specialists, orthotists, plastic and orthopedic surgeons, this invaluable third edition, so timely given the continued rise of diabetes and its complications, clearly describes established techniques known to be effective.  This updated edition blends new knowledge with the time-tested principles of diabetic foot management and will be of significant value to all physicians and researchers with an interest in a state-of-the-art understanding of diabetic foot.

Abstract

The discovery of leptin little more than a decade ago, as a hormone produced in white adipose tissue with an important role in satiety and energy expenditure, was a seminal event in our understanding of adiposity. This initial advance in the new endocrinology of obesity was soon followed by the realization that leptin was not only produced in adipose tissue, but in many different tissues of the body, and that receptors were similarly distributed. Additionally, the early recognition of infertility that was associated with leptin deficiency prompted research that identified roles for the polypeptide in virtually every area of reproductive biology. A general interest in leptin has rapidly produced inroads into unexpected areas of physiology that may eventually elucidate the varied relationships of adiposity to human health and disease. These developments have been paralleled by a rigorous investigation as a product of pharmaceutical interest. The broad range of physiology and the clinical situations in which leptin is now implicated is reviewed for the first time in the present volume. ***Series Editor's comments**** This volume integrates cutting edge basic and clinical information encompassing the expression of leptin and leptin receptors, pathophysiology and clinical role of leptin- a new neuroendocrine hormone with pleiotropic roles in appetite regulation, metabolic, inflammatory, neoplastic, cardiovascular and reproductive functions. This single volume encyclopedic coverage is indispensable to students, postdoctoral trainees, fellows, scientists and practitioners interested in neuroendocrine peptide control of multiple cellular functions.
