Tapiola is a modern city built in a rural community. It was built as both an experiment on how to create towns and make them socially as well as economically habitable; as a model to challenge many accepted ideas on residential area design and to influence the future pattern of Finland's urbanization.

In this book, Stanley Buder examines the Garden City movement from its origins in mid-nineteenth-century England to its subsequent development and elaboration in twentieth- century America. The Garden City movement emphasized green belts around cities but was not identified exclusively with suburban development. Much of the city planning which formed the basis for the Garden City movement was based upon designing the ideal community. But this sense of idealism was soon lost with the transfer of the movement to America, and indeed it was unable to sustain itself in the communities of its origin in England.

Sociable Cities is published to coincide with the centenary of the publication of Ebenezer Howard's revolutionary Garden Cities of Tomorrow. Howard's book would prove to be the most influential work on city planning in the 20th Century. The book provided the template for some thirty new towns in the United Kingdom - and countless others across the rest of the world - helped to establish the Town and Country Planning Association and ultimately led to an Act of Parliament which established how the building of our cities would be governed. At its heart, Garden Cities argues for a return to civilised and sustainable urban communities. Sociable Cities assesses how Howard's work has faced up to the concerns of the 20th Century. Rarely have these concerns - the development of brown and green field sites, public versus private transport, the political will behind sustainability, public access to the countryside, and the quality of life in and the future of out cities - been so pressing. Finally, in analysing future trends, Peter Hall and Colin Ward take Howard's Garden Cities into the 21st Century. This landmark book will be of interest to all who are concerned for the future of our cities and the future of our countryside.

In the changing world of interwar Europe a longing for stability rose to the surface of social life. Newly developed neighbourhoods and buildings were designed to create the healing community that many people were dreaming of. Various social groups with nationalist, ideological, or religious agendas made this concept of community a cornerstone in their framework and appropriated it to prescribe the relations between architecture and modernity. This book analyses the various ways in which these relations were determined. Most activists/entities encountered the potentialities of modernity, such as technology or mass media, in an accommodating way. In a broad spectrum of actions and proposals - from art exhibitions to séances, photo reports to roof tiles, landscapes to sanitation - these reformists were hoping to create a universe in which their communal dream could become a reality. The 17 contributions to this richly illustrated volume draw the contours of this new world by analysing its foundations and working mechanisms at its heart.
