Abstract

Now that the Energy Certificate for Buildings has been introduced throughout the European Union, we can expect to see a sharp rise in the number of building renovations. This volume is a practical guide with concrete recommendations for realizing energy-related renovation measures - it accompanies the planner from design to execution. All energy-related issues are treated according to their goals. Large-scale detail drawings document constructive solutions for removing structural weaknesses. An overview of installation engineering measures helps to evaluate possibilities, costs, and economic viability. The book uses realized projects to demonstrate that sustainable improvements cannot be achieved by energy-specific measures alone - it is also important to consider the building as a whole. All of the examples are documented with a state analysis as well as a depiction and assessment of the measures taken.

Abstract

Building Energy Flexibility and Demand Management looks at the high penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources and the need for increased flexibility. Ensuring electrical power systems adapt to dynamic energy demand and supply conditions, the book supports the transition to a renewable energy future with current fluctuating power generation. By facilitating the penetration of renewable energy sources into the building sector and balancing electricity supply with demand in real-time, this book will provide fundamental concepts, theories, and methods to understand, quantify, design and optimize building energy flexibility. In addition, the book also provides case studies with emerging technologies to enhance building energy flexibility and demonstrate how demand management strategies can utilize energy flexibility for demand reduction and load shifting. It will be useful for all those researchers and engineers working in flexible energy systems and advanced demand side management strategies. --

Abstract

In this book we seek to approach the architecture-energy combination and its relationship to human comfort and the environment .There are chapters on thermal comfort, low energy architecture dealing with various criterion for comfort in different parts of the World. The book also seeks to understand how previous generations lived in harsh climates and without abundant sources of energy, yet managed to design and build appropriate dwellings providing both comfort and harmony with the environment. Other chapters deal with the bioclimatic concept in Vernacular Architecture; the major rol

Abstract

The need of today is to have energy efficient buildings materials andconstruction technologies that cater to this rising need. Hence, selectingconstruction and finishing materials that have low embodied energy and haveless operational and maintenance cost is the most powerful tool for thearchitects, designers and the constructors to achieve high energy efficiencyin buildings. This special volume on 'Materials and Technologies for GreenConstruction' contains Ten chapters which address a wide range of issuespertaining to building materials and technologies with reference to energyefficiency. Abstract

Architecture is energy. Lines drawn on paper to represent architectural intentions also imply decades and sometimes centuries of associated energy and material flows. Form Follows Energy is about the relationship between energy and the form of our built environment. It examines the optimisation of energy flows in building and urban design and the implications for form and configuration. It speaks to both architectural and engineering audiences and offers for the first time a truly interdisciplinary overview on the subject, explaining the complex relationships between energy and architecture in an easy to follow manner and using simple diagrams to show how energy design strategies can be used to maximize the energy performance of our built environment, while at the same time leading to new aesthetic qualities and radically new forms in architecture and urban design. Case studies are used to illustrate the theory. The books philosophy is based on the guiding principles underlying nearly 30 years work in practice, research and teaching. It is relatively easy to make something simple seem complicated. To make a complex topic seem simple and easily understandable is far more of a challenge and this is the aim of this book.

Abstract

"In Fire and Memory, Luis Fernandez-Galiano reconstructs the historical, theoretical, and contemporary relationship between architecture and energy, calling on disciplines as diverse as anthropology and economics, and in particular on ecology and thermodynamics. Beginning with the mythical fire at the origins of architecture and moving to its symbolic representation in the twentieth century, Galiano develops a theoretical dialogue between combustion and construction that ranges from Vitruvius to Le Corbusier, from the mechanical and organic to time and entropy. Galiano points out that energy, so important to the origins of architectural theory in Vitruvius's time, has been absent from such theory since the introduction of the "dictatorship of the eye" over the other senses. With Fire and Memory, he reintroduces energy to the discussion of architecture and reminds us that the sense of touch is as necessary to an understanding of the environment as the sense of sight."--Jacket.

Abstract

"The deteriorating condition of federal facilities poses economic, safety, operational, and environmental risks to the federal government, to the achievement of the missions of federal agencies, and to the achievement of public policy goals. Primary factors underlying this deterioration are the age of federal facilities--about half are at least 50 years old--and decades of inadequate investment for their maintenance and repair. These issues are not new and there are no quick fixes. However, the current operating environment provides both the impetus and the opportunity to place investments in federal facilities' maintenance and repair on a new, more sustainable course for the 21st Century. Despite the magnitude of investments, funding for the maintenance and repair of federal facilities has been inadequate for many years, and myriad projects have been deferred. Predicting Outcomes of Investments in Maintenance and Repair of Federal Facilities identifies processes and practices for transforming the current portfolio of federal facilities into one that is more economically, physically, and environmentally sustainable. This report addresses ways to predict or quantify the outcomes that can be expected from a given level of maintenance and repair investments in federal facilities or facilities' systems, and what strategies, measures, and data should be in place to determine the actual outcomes of facilities maintenance and repair investments."--Publisher's description.

Abstract

The sustainable renovation of older buildings involves more than just an improvement of their energy footprint â€" and it is due to the complexity of the issue why architects are destined to take on this task. The book, Energy efficiency refurbishments, was written by architects for architects. It shows how design, construction and systems engineering carried out during the renovation of diverse types of buildings fit together.
