Few medical or scientific addresses have so unmistakeably made history as the presentation delivered by Alois Alzheimer on November 4th, 1906 in Tübingen. The celebratory event, "Alzheimer 100 Years and Beyond" organized on the initiative of the Alzheimer community in Germany and worldwide, in collaboration with the Fondation Ipsen, at the very site of the original lecture, namely the Institute of Psychiatry at the University of Tübingen in Germany from November 2nd to 5th, 2006, was the highlight of the Alzheimer Year. Over the last century of Alzheimer research (1906-2006), remarkable progress has been achieved. Most of the authors of the major discoveries and the people involved in research in this field will present, during the meeting and in this volume, the pioneering research explaining the conditions under which they were conducted. The goal of this book is to honor the work accomplished, to summarize the most important knowledge and to provide material for the history of science.

Le sida est devenu aujourd'hui la maladie de notre fin de siècle. Par ses associations avec le sang, le sexe et la mort, il traduit les représentations essentielles de la société actuelle quant à ses propres fondements en même temps qu'il ravive les figures discursives de peur et d'exclusion attachées aux épidémies antérieures. Pour en saisir le jeu de significations et de constructions symboliques, le présent ouvrage analyse, en le considérant comme un matériau d'étude ethnographique, un corpus de romans en français et en anglais parus entre 1987 et 1992. La lecture adoptée se veut ethno-critique, entre les champs de l'anthropologie et de la critique littéraire. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of senile dementia, affecting more than 24 million people worldwide. It is characterised pathologically by abnormally high levels of neurofibrillary tangles resulting from the accumulation of tau protein in dead and dying neurons, and by elevated numbers of senile plaques in the cortex and hippocampus of the brain. Until a cure exists, Dupuytren's disease and related disorders such as Ledderhose's disease will pose lifelong threats of functional impairment for affected individuals. A better understanding of the onset of disease, early detection and functional preservation are of the utmost importance to minimize the impact of these conditions. This book is based on presentations and discussions at the 2010 International Symposium on Dupuytren's disease held in Miami, Florida, but it also includes new data and additional chapters.
