Initiated as a Surrealist magazine, Minotaure developed into a forum for a much broader view of contemporary art of the 1930's, and the influences upon it. The artistic director was E. Tériade (1897-1983), and it was published and edited by Albert Skira (1904-1973) whose aim was to provide a luxurious avante-garde periodical. It included regular contributions by Paul Eluard (1895-1952) and Salvador Dali (1904-1989) among others. The cover of the first issue was designed by Pablo Picasso (1881-1973).
