Abstract

Foreword / Bernard Holland -- Preface -- Introduction -- The development, structure, and therapeutic use of group behavior -- The dynamics of group therapy -- The group contract -- The psychodynamics of separation : its relationship to group therapy reality events and the termination of group therapy -- Silence and acting out in group therapy -- An illustrative analysis of an outpatient group -- Group therapy in schizophrenia, manic-depressive and chronic psychotic depressive reactions -- Hospital ward meetings : a therapeutic group activity. "The purpose of this book is to present the theory, dynamics, and technique of one model of group therapy--a model based on the psychodynamic understanding of human group behavior. This model is not, of course, the first to employ psychodynamic methodology. An examination of the literature on group therapy reveals many theories and techniques that purport to be psychodynamic. Unfortunately, few studies explain in detail just how psychodynamic methodology may be therapeutically used in a group situation. This book proposes to do just that. The author recognizes that there are still many unanswered questions about group therapy in general and even about this model in particular, and that a great need exists for properly controlled research. However, instead of attempting to resolve all the conflicting claims or to offer a definitive analysis of group therapy--a task clearly beyond the scope of one book or study--the present work is offered merely as a primer on the subject. Professional personnel interested in group therapy can profit from the understanding of the dynamics of group relationships and their application to the model of group therapy here presented. The principles outlined in these pages may be adapted to psychology or social work studies as well as psychiatry"--
