Die Preußische Akademie der Künste bildete in der Weimarer Zeit den Parnass der deutschen Dichter und Denker. Aber nur ein Teil ihrer prominenten Mitglieder, Heinrich Mann, Käthe Kollwitz, der Berliner Stadtbaurat Martin Wagner u.a., waren nach Hitlers Machtergreifung bereit, das republikanische Akademiekonzept energisch zu verteidigen und jeden Eingriff in die Autonomie der Akademie zurückzuweisen. Hildegard Brenner zeigt in ihrer Dokumentation den Mechanismus der politischen Formierung und Degradierung der damals namhaftesten deutschen Kunst-Institution auf. Deutlich wird: Die sogenannte Gleichschaltung war im Bereich der Künste wie auf anderen Gebieten nicht nur von außen auferlegter Zwang. Sie wurde maßgeblich gefördert durch das individualistische Kunst- und Selbstverständnis bürgerlicher Schriftsteller und Künstler, das jegliche solidarische Stellungnahme oder Aktion verhinderte.
