It has long been recognized that the Scandinavian sources for studies in historical demography are of an exceptionally high quality both with respect to coverage of the population and with respect to the detailed information in early parish registers and census lists. This selection of articles, where scholars from the fields of history, ethnology, sociology, theoretical demography, economics and medicine discuss a variety of problems in demographic history, shows not only the present level of research in the Scandinavian countries, but it also contributes to important aspects in the international debate on demographic problems. The sources used are from Denmark, Finland, Germany, Norway, Sweden and the Baltic States, and the time period covered is from early seventeenth century to the second world war.
