Abstract

Scientific literature on pig behavior and its practical application was reviewed and discussed. Areas were identified where behavioral research is likely to produce major benefits in productivity. It was noted that some husbandry practices appear to be out of harmony with the behavior of domestic animals, and that an imaginative research effort is needed to improve confinement rearing of pigs.

Abstract

Different housing systems for sows in gestation were compared and evaluated by means of production data, behavioural studies and hygiene and working environment studies. All studies were made on one, closed, pure breed Swedish Landrace sow herd, with about 100 sows in production. during a given period at least 2 different housing systems were concomitantly tested, and all animals were equally treated with respect to feeding, climate conditions, general husbandry procedures,, amount of straw used etc. The groups of sows in the different housing systems were equally distributed as to age and boar used for service, and upon returning from the farrowing and lactation period, were consistently allocated to the same housing system. Production parameters, treatments and sign of disease were continuously recorded . All pigs which were born dead or died during the suckling period were submitted to routine post mortem examination. The following housing systems were investigated.
