"Vichy-Auschwitz" est un ouvrage exceptionnel à de nombreux titres : d'une part, il contient tous les documents, pour la plupart inédits, concernant la coopération gouvernementale, policière et administrative apportée par Vichy dans la chasse aux Juifs en 1942, qui fut l'année terrible pour les Juifs de France. Ainsi fait-il entrer pour la première fois dans notre patrimoine historique une masse considérable de documents capitaux permettant au lecteur de se faire sa propre opinion sur l'un des épisodes les plus tragiques de notre histoire. D'autre part, Serge Klarsfeld reconstitue méthodiquement, jour après jour, l'enchaînement des événements qui ont abouti à la mise en œuvre de la "solution finale" en France même, rendant compréhensible ce qui, jusqu'à aujourd'hui, restait encore en grande partie obscur ou mal connu. Par ailleurs, il cerne minutieusement les responsabilités des principaux dirigeants tels que Laval, Pétain, Bousquet, Leguay et Darquier. Enfin Serge Klarsfeld met en évidence l'importance décisive des interventions du haut clergé et des réactions de l'opinion publique française qui contraignirent Vichy, dès septembre 1942, à interrompre les arrestations massives de Juifs, telles qu'elles avaient été opérées pendant l'été 1942. Serge Klarsfeld, président des "Fils et Filles des Déportés Juifs de France", avocat, historien, militant, a démasqué les principaux responsables de l'appareil policier nazi en France et a notamment obtenu la condamnation de Lischka, puis, tout récemment, l'arrestation de Klaus Barbie. A publié en 1978 un monumental "Mémorial de la Déportation des Juifs de France" et donne aujourd'hui un ouvrage tout aussi exceptionnel, "Vichy-Auschwitz", qui restera l'ouvrage de référence sur la mise en pratique de la "solution finale" en France.
