Widowed at age 20, Ikuyo remarries when her daughter, Tomoko, is 6. The second marriage doesn't go well due to Ikuyo's willful nature and she leaves taking Tomoko with her. However, they face a life of poverty and Tomoko is sold as a child geisha while in elementary school. At age 17 Tomoko is reunited with her mother again who is as selfish as before. Tomoko meets a man named Ezaki and hopes to marry him one day. She buys a geisha house, but it is destroyed in the Kanto earthquake. She later manages to open a small hotel in the Tsukiji district of Tokyo. Her dream of marrying Ezaki is ruined when he finds out that her mother is a prostitute and they break up.
