Abstract

"This book gives a readable introduction to modern continuum mechanics following the remarkable reorganization and further development and expansion of classical continuum mechanics by Walter Noll and his associates in the flowstream of Newton, James Bernoulli, Euler, Cauchy and others. The present introductory text is suitably expressed and appropriate for senior under¬graduate and beginning graduate students of engineering, science and mathe¬matics. The development is self-contained and includes an introduction to tensor algebra and tensor calculus along with a discussion of general curvilinear coordinate systems. The potency of the theory along with the usefulness of general coordinates are illustrated by the material on the torsion of an elastic cylinder, culminating in an explanation of the fact that an incompressible isotropic elastic cylinder will lengthen in proportion to the square of the twist when twisted severely. This is the Poynting effect in its classical form and is an example of various results that cannot be explained by the corresponding classical in¬finitesimal theories. The book contains many worked examples and more than 220 exercises, most of which include helpful hints for the student."
