Drawing on extensive case studies and his experience as director of psychiatric services at the Regional Treatment Centre in Ontario, Geoffrey Conacher traces the MDO management process from initial assessment, through secure stabilization, to preparation for release and subsequent community supervision. He outlines the difficulties of managing a population of serious offenders and highlights elements of treatment that are essential if the MDO is to be reintegrated into the community. Conacher also considers dangerousness, issues of treatment, and forensic aspects of mental disorder, as well as psychiatric concerns that are particular to the prison context, such as ethical issues, predatory sexual behaviour, self-mutilation, suicide, the "inadequate offender," and the predictably dangerous mentally disordered offender. Management of the Mentally Disordered Offender in Prisons makes an important addition to existing psychiatric literature by bringing to the fore a neglected area of tremendous social concern.

"Why did families in the past request that some of their members be forcibly removed from their midst and locked away? What social conditions lay behind the drama of enforced removal and confinement that was played out between family members and their unruly relatives?" "Through their analysis of thousands of case histories in Brabant and Flanders the authors are able to shed light on the material and emotional survival strategies of the growing number of urban families who were requesting the confinement of one of their own members, and to relate those personal decisions to the changes taking place within the urban communities. Disordered Lives is a penetrating study of rebellious youths, adulterous women, alcoholics and violent husbands. In contrast to other 'troublemakers' who have left no trace, these ones have made history. They showed their contemporaries and later generations where the limits of the permissible lay - and why."--Jacket

Drawing upon extensive fieldwork in two contrasting English maximum security prisons, the authors systematically compare their institutional order, including the differing control strategies deployed in each, as seen by both custodians and captives, controllers and controlled.
