Although only 147 tablets have been discovered at Beydar, and although almost all the tablets contain administrative texts, they are nevertheless of great importance for our understanding of the culture and the society of Northern Jazirah in the second half of the third millenium B.C. Until the discovery of tablets at Beydar, Northern Syria had not yielded any tablets dating to the Early Dynastic period. For the first time we get an idea not only of the language, the calender, the metrology and the pantheon of Northern Syria, but also of its political and cultic institutions. These documents are now published in this second issue in the Subartu-Series. It contains chapters on linguistics, historical evaluation, technical aspects, geography, sign lists, metrology, calendars, personal names, terminology, groups of documents, transliterations.

Written during the first years of the reconstruction of the Lebanese capital following the civil war, this work by May Davie undertakes to retrace in its entirety the urban expansion of Beirut between 1840 and 1940. The author has carried out a precious work of synthesis publications that have already addressed this subject and also relied on unpublished documents - family, parish and other records - in order to shed original light on the history of the city through the genesis of its suburbs. A simple small coastal town for a long time, Beirut has seen its population increase from 20,000 to 160,000 inhabitants in less than a hundred years. Driven by the industrial revolution and a series of administrative reforms carried out by the Ottoman power, it enters a deep urban transformation phase from the middle of the XIX th century and is transformed into "bourgeois city of the Mediterranean". The second historic turning point, the French Mandate contributes to the modernization of infrastructure and the expansion of Beirut. But the historian is also keen to highlight the negative impacts of French policy. According to Davie, the establishment of a national and republican model in Lebanon has disrupted the self-regulating community balance at work within the city for centuries and, as a consequence, favoured the emergence of poorly integrated peripheries and places of exclusion and conflict.

This volume examines the transmission of biblical pseudepigraphic literature and motifs from their largely Jewish cultural contexts in Palestine to developing gnostic milieux of Syria and Mesopotamia, particularly that one lying behind the birth and growth of Manichaeism. It surveys biblical pseudepigraphic literary activity in the late antique Near East, devoting special attention to revelatory works attributed to the five biblical forefathers who are cited in the Cologne Mani Codex : Adam, Seth, Enosh, Shem, and Enoch. The author provides a philological, literary, and religio-historical analysis of each of the five pseudepigraphic citations contained in the Codex, and offers hypotheses regarding the original provenance of each citation and the means by which these traditions have been adapted to their present context. This study is an important contribution to the scholarly reassessment of the roles played by Second Temple Judaism, Jewish Christian sectarianism, and classical gnosis in the formulation and development of Syro-Mesopotamian religious currents.
