The civilisation of Ancient Egypt extended virtually unbroken from the fourth millennium BC to the conquest of Alexander the Great. During this time the characteristic architectural and artistic styles changed and developed, as this book so vividly shows. The Egyptians, concerned with the continuation of life after death, in their tombs recreated life for the dead in a naturalistic way. The daily life of this ancient civilisation was represented on the tomb walls and the personal possessions that were buried in the tombs have given us deeper insights into their culture. They have left us revealing portraits ranging from the civil servants of the kings to the kings and queens themselves. These men and women built the pyramids at Giza ; the tombs at Thebes, including the treasure-filled burial-place of Tutankh-amon ; and the temples of Luxor and Karnak. These monuments with their wall-reliefs, paintings and treasures as well as many other works of art are reproduced in over 400 illustrations, many in colour. The classic text, now revised and with a new bibliography, is the definitive survey of this subject.
