Abstract

The most accessible introduction to the theory and practice of multivariate analysisMultivariate Statistical Inference and Applications is a user-friendly introduction to basic multivariate analysis theory and practice for statistics majors as well as nonmajors with little or no background in theoretical statistics. Among the many special features of this extremely accessible first text on multivariate analysis are:* Clear, step-by-step explanations of all key concepts and procedures along with original, easy-to-follow proofs* Numerous problems, examples, and tables of distributions* Many real-world data sets drawn from a wide range of disciplines* Reviews of univariate procedures that give rise to multivariate techniques* An extensive survey of the world literature on multivariate analysis* An in-depth review of matrix theory* A disk including all the data sets and SAS command files for all examples and numerical problems found in the bookThese same features also make Multivariate Statistical Inference and Applications an excellent professional resource for scientists and clinicians who need to acquaint themselves with multivariate techniques. It can be used as a stand-alone introduction or in concert with its more methods-oriented sibling volume, the critically acclaimed Methods of Multivariate Analysis.

Abstract

The design inference uncovers intelligent causes by isolating their key trademark: specified events of small probability. Just about anything that happens is highly improbable, but when a highly improbable event is also specified (i.e. conforms to an independently given pattern) undirected natural causes lose their explanatory power. Design inferences can be found in a range of scientific pursuits from forensic science to research into the origins of life to the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. This challenging and provocative 1998 book shows how incomplete undirected causes are for science and breathes new life into classical design arguments. It will be read with particular interest by philosophers of science and religion, other philosophers concerned with epistemology and logic, probability and complexity theorists, and statisticians.

Abstract

This book provides an account of the theory and applications of multivariate reduced-rank regression, a tool of multivariate analysis that recently has come into increased use in broad areas of applications. In addition to a historical review of the topic, its connection to other widely used statistical methods - such as multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA), discriminant analysis, principal components, canonical correlation analysis, and errors-in-variables models - is also discussed. This book should appeal to both practitioners and researchers who may deal with moderate and high-dimensional multivariate data. This book can be ideally used for seminar-type courses taken by advanced graduate students in statistics, econometrics, business, and engineering.
