This study examined the effects of environmental enrichment on aggressive behaviour and dominance relationships in growing pigs. Three hundred and twenty pigs were reared from birth to 15 weeks of age in either barren or enriched environments. The barren environments were defined by common intensive housing conditions (ie with slatted floors and in terms of recommended space allowances), while the enriched environments incorporated extra space and substrates for manipulation. Aggressive behaviour was observed in a social confrontation test during the suckling period and dominance relationships were assessed from a food competition test at 12 weeks of age. Animals were weighed at regular intervals throughout the experiment. Environmental enrichment reduced the expression of aggressive behaviour. Pigs from enriched rearing environments fought significantly less with unfamiliar animals than those from barren environments when tested under standard conditions (mean of 1.46 vs 2.75 fights per 30min test for enriched vs barren environments, SEM 0.20 P < 0.001). The nature of dominance relationships also appeared to differ between barren and enriched environments. In barren environments, dominance among pen mates was correlated with (r = 0.33, P < 0.01), whereas in enriched environments it was correlated with body weight (r = 0.24, P < 0.01). Correlations between behaviour in the social confrontation and food competition tests suggested that dominance characteristics were established early in life and remained stable through the growing period

Two experiments examined the effect of age and diet on behavioural responses of piglets to separation from the sow. In Experiment 1, the vocalizations of piglets were recorded during short term (10 min) isolation from the sow and litter-mates at 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks of age. From each of 10 litters, two piglets were assigned to each of the four age groups. Piglets of all ages vocalized intensely during isolation, but call rate was lower with older piglets, especially for high-frequency calls (> 500 Hz). When returned to the sow, piglets made distinctive 'quacking' vocalizations, and older piglets produced fewer of these calls than younger piglets. Experiment 2 involved two treatments: weaning age and diet quality. Piglets were weaned at either 2 weeks of age and onto a diet formulated for piglets of this age, or at 4 weeks of age and fed either a diet typically provided for piglets of this age or a more palatable and nutritionally complex diet. Three piglets from each of 16 litters were assigned to each of the three treatment groups. We monitored vocalizations over the first 3 days after weaning, and measured the incidence of belly-nosing during the subsequent week. Piglets weaned onto the standard diet at 4 weeks produced high-frequency calls (> 500 Hz) at a significantly higher rate than those weaned onto the more complex diet, but there was no effect of diet on the incidence of belly-nosing. Piglets weaned at 2 weeks produced more high-frequency calls and performed more belly-nosing than piglets weaned at 4 weeks onto either diet. Thus the behavioural response to separation is greater at younger ages both when the period of separation is too short for diet to be a factor (Experiment 1) and when younger piglets are provided with a specialized diet that allows them to achieve acceptable weight gain after weaning (Experiment 2). Over one million people world-wide have benefited from successful tissue and organ transplants and survival rates have dramatically improved. But transplantation has become a victim of its own success. The demand for human organs can no longer be met and deaths of persons on waiting lists have more than doubled since 1988. A number of alternatives have been proposed to fill the gap between the supply and demand of organs and the past few years have seen the development of various approaches derived from recent advances in biotechnology. Among these technologies is xenotransplantation - the transplantation of viable cells, tissues and organs from one animal species to another. Xenotransplantation of cells and tissues has been approved for clinical trials in a number of OECD countries. However, opinions about the risks from these early procedures and whether to proceed any further vary. At the New York 1998 Workshop on "International issues in transplantation biotechnology including the use of non-human cells, tissues and organs", world leaders in the field reported on the state of the art and unmet needs in transplantation, addressing in particular the potential, the risks, the ethics and socio-economic impacts of xenotransplantation. Based on presentations, transcripts of round-table discussions and comments raised at the workshop, this book provides an overview of the field and of current regulatory frameworks and addresses the most pressing international policy considerations on xenotransplantation.
