What are the prospects for stability in Indonesia? Will the country fragment? How will the politics of Malaysia unfold in the next two years? What will happen in the Philippines? Why has foreign direct investment been falling in Southeast Asia compared with Northeast Asia? What will be the economic performance of Southeast Asian countries in 2001 and 2002? Regional Outlook: Southeast Asia 2001-2002 attempts to answer these and other questions with succinct yet substantive analyses of current political and economic trends in the region and the likely developments over the next year or two. It is written by a team of foreign and local experts for the busy non-specialist reader who does not have the time for lengthy academic analyses.

Can women succeed? Is women's work appreciated equally to men's? Do women's salaries reflect the quality and quantity of work they do? Does gender make a difference? These questions, which often emerge even in democratic societies and free-market economies, are much more acute in the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe. Gender has been an issue thus far neglected in transition economies. Drawing on official statistics, an international multidisciplinary team of sociologists, economists, demographers and geographers examines how women have been affected by the labor market reforms in Poland in the transition period of the 1990s. The issues discussed include occupational segregation, the social mobility of women, demographic change, the power and participation of women in public life, women's organizations, and labor market reform.

Economists have traditionally studied aggregate behavior as the outcome of individual decisions made interactively, while sociologists have focused on the role of social influences on individual behavior. Over the past decade, however, the barriers between the disciplines have broken down, resulting in the new area of social economics. Social economics is based on the assumption that individuals are directly influenced by the choices and characteristics of others, creating a feedback loop from the past choices of some people to the current social context and hence future choices of others. The essays in this book, by some of the creators of the field, provide an overview of social economics and represent a variety of approaches, including theoretical model-building, empirical studies, statistical analyses, and philosophical reflections.

This book examines global change from a dialectical perspective. Looking at global change in terms of unipolarisation in international security, globalisation in the world economy, and democratisation in global governance, the volume provides a refreshingly Japanese angle on addressing complex interplays between the social forces underlying these themes. The book is indispensable reading for undergraduate and graduate students or IR theory, international security, international political economy, and global governance, as well as American and Japanese foreign policy.
