Most of the less-favoured regions in Europe feature large areas of forestland. The FORWARD (Forest Resources for Work Opportunities and Regional Development) project was initiated to generate employment and income based on forest resources. This report presents the findings of the project.

What we now know of as environmentalism began with the establishment of the first empire forest in 1855 in British India, and during the second half of the nineteenth century, over ten per cent of the land surface of the earth became protected as a public trust. Sprawling forest reservations, many of them larger than modern nations, became revenue-producing forests that protected the whole 'household of nature', and Rudyard Kipling and Theodore Roosevelt were among those who celebrated a new class of government foresters as public heroes. Imperial foresters warned of impending catastrophe, desertification and global climate change if the reverse process of deforestation continued. The empire forestry movement spread through India, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and then the United States to other parts of the globe, and Gregory Barton's study looks at the origins of environmentalism in a global perspective.

It is widely held that a climax of vegetation of closed forest systems covered the lowlands of Central and Western Europe before humans intervened in prehistoric times to develop pastoral agriculture. If this intervention had not taken place, it would still be there and so if left, the grassland vegetation we see today would revert to its natural closed forest state, although with a reduced number of wild species. This book challenges this view, using examples from pollen analyses and studies on tree species such as oak and hazel. It tests the hypothesis that species composition, structure and succession of vegetation was governed by herbivores and that the Central and Western European lowlands were covered in grasslands, scrub, solitary tress and groves surrounded by cover and border vegetation. Comparative information from North America is also included.

THE MYCOTA Esser Bennett (Eds.) The Series: The fungi represent a heterogeneous assemblage of eukaryotic microorganisms and have become favored organisms for research at the cellular and molecular level. Such research involvement has been stimulated by interest in the biotechnological application of fungi in processes related to industry, agriculture and ecology. Considering both yeasts and mycelial fungi, THE MYCOTA highlights developments in both basic and applied research and presents an overview of funggal systematics and cell structure. Foremost authorities in research mycology have been assembled to edit and contribute to the volumes. This Volume: Industrial Applications Osiewacz (Ed.) The tenth volume includes: Traditional Food and Beverage Fermentation, Metabolites and Enzymes, Conversion of Substrates and Recovery of Metals from Solutions, Recent Developments and Strategies.

The risks posed by forest destruction throughout the world are highly significant for all. Not only are forests a critical source of timber and non-timber forest products, but they provide environmental services that are the basis of life on Earth. However, only rarely do beneficiaries pay for the goods and services they experience, and there are servere consquences as a result for the poor and for the forests themselves.; It has proved difficult to translate the theory of market-based approaches into practice. Based on extensive research and case studies of biodiversity conservation, watershed protected and carbon sequestration, this book demonstrates how payment systems can be establised in practice, their effectiveness and their implications for the poor.
