Abstract

This new edition outlines the design and implementation of an effective respiratory protective equipment program for industries in which workers are at risk from inhaled particulates, toxins and other hazardous materials. The book is intended for managers, health and safety committees, safety specialists and occupational health professionals who need the most up-to-date and practical advice in a concise and easy to read step-by-step form rather than an abstract and theoretical reference on the subject. As in the first edition, the authors present individual components of a respiratory p

Abstract

Quality control is a scientific means for conducting observations, tests, and inspections and thereby making decisions that improve the perfomance of industrial processes. This book develops a set of dynamic approaches characterized by coordination. In practice, quality control problems almost never exist in isolation. The basic methodology underlying the studies is Markov decision programming. The book can be used as a graduate text for a new course on statistical process control, or as a reference for researchers and practitioners in mathematics, operations research and operations management, quality control, production planning, and logistics.

Abstract

Most of the world’s redundant ships are scrapped on the beaches of the Indian sub-continent, largely by hand. As well as cargo residues and wastes, ships contain high levels of hazardous materials that are released into the surrounding ecology when scrapped. The scrapping process is labour-intensive and largely manual; injuries and death are commonplace. Shipbreaking was a relatively obscure industry until the late 1990s. In just 12 years, action by environmental NGOs has led to the ratification of an international treaty targeting the extensive harm to human and environmental health arising from this heavy, polluting industry; it has also produced important case law. Attempts to regulate the industry via the Basel Convention have resulted in a strong polarization of opinion as to its applicability, and various international guidelines have also failed because of their voluntary nature. The adoption of the Hong Kong Convention in 2009 was a serious attempt to introduce international controls to this industry.

Abstract

This second edition of this useful and informative book provides an approach to the protection of children through the development of a programme on occupational safety and health specifically addressed to working children. It illustrates how this can be done within a framework of a national policy aimed at the elimination of child labour. This new edition takes account of the provisions of the ILO's Worst Forms of Child Labour Convention, 1999 (No. 182), covering work that is likely to harm the health, safety and morals of children, and presents updated information on health and safety risks,
