This impressive survey of world architecture includes a wealth of information, and is beautifully formatted and enhanced with 570 photographs (300 in color) and 350 line drawings. A series of maps precedes the informative and well-written text. The introduction gives an overview of the design and construction of both individual buildings and entire communities, and the chapters are arranged chronologically from prehistoric times to late twentieth century. There is heavy emphasis on Western traditions, but also considerable discussion of Asian, Islamic, Russian, and pre-Columbian American structures. Architectural terms are highlighted in bold type the first time they appear and are presented together in a glossary along with an excellent annotated bibliography. Perhaps the most rewarding features, besides the stunning color illustrations, are the line drawings depicting floor plans and elevations. Each chapter presents a brief overview of historical events and social customs that influenced architectural styles, as well as individuals who played significant roles in the support, design, and construction of various projects. Interspersed throughout are separate essays highlighting particular aspects of architectural history. A travers l'étude de bâtiments remarquables, qui sont autant d' "Histoires d'architecture", constitutives de l'histoire de l'architecture, ce recueil se voudrait un abrégé des périodes classique et moderne et de leurs sources. Pour chaque exemple choisi, la matérialité du bâtiment, sa façon d'occuper une parcelle, son intériorité, sa lumière, sa construction, ses matériaux, ont été confrontés aux écrits, doctrines ou théories qui guidèrent sa conception, jusqu'à ce que d'objet ce bâtiment redevienne peu à peu un projet, c'est-à-dire un faisceau d'hypothèses ouvert aux " possibles " de son temps. Non plus une chose aboutie, limitée par des murs et des dates, mais une controverse liée à une époque, miniaturisée à l'intérieur d'une enveloppe, et rendue intelligible par le texte et l'image. Du Panthéon de Rome aux villas de Louis I. Kahn, vingt-deux monographies de bâtiments, regroupés par familles - églises, villas, musées, bibliothèques, grands magasins et usines -, où chacun deux se livre à partir du programme singulier et de la conjoncture qui lui donnèrent naissance en sorte que ce ne soit pas l'époque qui explique le bâtiment, mais plutôt le bâtiment qui dévoile son époque. Toutes les études sont illustrées par un abondant corpus de dessins analytiques originaux et par des photographies.
