Abstract

Geography today is a vibrant amalgam of theories, methods, and data about past, current, and emerging worlds. Geography and the geographers who produce it dwell at the intersection of the natural sciences, the social sciences, and the humanities, and various admixtures of their theories, methods, and data constitute the 100 chapters included in WorldMinds. Arrayed under the rubrics of politics and power, human wellbeing, cities, livelihood, ecosystems, human environment interactions, hazards, natural systems, new methods, and human perceptions, these 100 short essays reveal and exemplify the conceptual and topical richness of contemporary North American geography. As is evident in these rubrics and essays, geography today is a many splendored enterprise ranging, as the editors note, "from feminist deconstruc tion to fluvial geomorphology." Geographers have something strikingly valuable to say about many, if not most of the problems that confront indi viduals and groups in locales and regions ranging from the plots of smallholders to the entire globe. The diverse chapters of WorldMinds well illustrate some of the key geographical perspectives that contribute usefully to the broader understanding of common problems.

Abstract

It is particularly appropriate that the AAG's Centennial Celebration should prompt the publication of a volume devoted to Geography and Technology. New technologies have always been important in advancing geographic understanding, but never have they been so thoroughly and rapidly transformative of the discipline as at this stage in geography's evolution. Just as new technologies have profoundly expanded both research possibilities and the knowledge base of other disciplines, such as biology, physics or medicine, so too are the revolutionary new geographic technologies developed during the past few decades extending frontiers in geographic research, education and applications. They are also creating new and resurgent roles for geography in both society and in the university. This trend is still accelerating, as the integration of geographic technologies, such as the global positioning system and geographic information systems (GPS/GIS), is creating an explosion of new "real-time, real-world" applications and research capabilities. The resultant dynamic space/time interactive research and management environments created by interactive GPS/GIS, among other technologies, places geography squarely at the forefront of advanced multidisciplinary research and modeling programs, and has created core organization management tools (geographic management systems) which will dramatically change the way governments and businesses work in the decades ahead. While these and other important geographic technologies, including remote sensing, location-based services, and many others addressed in this book, are forging new opportunities for geography and geographers, they also pose challenges.

Abstract

In this book, locational preferences of firms in The Netherlands and Germany are studied from a behavioural point of view. Stated preferences of entrepreneurs in each country are examined, using various types of statistical analysis. The influence of both firm and place characteristics is analysed. Special attention is given to the relation between distance and rating. Other topics mentioned are changes in the rating patterns in time, the relation of locational preferences with other types of spatial preferences and with locational behaviour. The results of the analyses may be regarded as relevant to behavioural theory as well as to the practice of government policies.

Abstract

Petermann's Maps focuses on the maps published in the famous German journal Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen . This journal, which still exists today, greatly influenced the development of scientific geography and cartography in Germany in the nineteenth century. Numerous articles have been published by recognized experts in this field, along with a multitude of illustrations, showing maps, prints and photographs. The journal developed into an important publication, setting the standard in the history of the great expeditions and discoveries, and European colonial matters. Petermann's Maps contains a bibliography of over 3400 maps, the complete series of maps published in Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen between the year of its foundation, 1855, to the end of the Second World War. Besides the bibliography 160 of the most attractive geographical and thematic coloured maps are included in Petermann's Maps . These maps can also be viewed on the CD-ROM accompanying the book.An extensive introduction precedes the cartobibliography proper, placing Petermanns Geographische Mitteilungen in its historical context. The introduction describes the history of geography from the eighteenth century onwards, outlining the development of the study of the science of cartography in Germany. The major role the founder of the journal, Augustus Petermann (1822-1878), and the publishing house Justus Perthes in Gotha played in these developments is discussed at length.

Abstract

Although it is generally understood that the Antarctic Ice Sheet plays a critical role in the changing global system, to date there is a general lack of readily available information on the subject. The Atlas of Antarctica is the first atlas on the seventh continent to be published in 20 years. It contains 145 accurate topographic and elevation maps derived from satellite data (GEOSAT and ERS-1 radar altimeter data), which are the best of their kind available today. Each map is accompanied by a description of geographic and glaciological features. The introductory chapters familiarise the reader with the world of the Antarctic Ice Sheet and its role in the global system, as well as discussing satellite remote sensing and geo-statistical methods at textbook level. Applications include detailed regional studies of 15 outlet glaciers of the inland ice, some of which are currently changing rapidly. Combinations with SAR data facilitate the study of surface structures and flow features. Despite its state-of-the-art scientific accuracy, the Atlas of Antarctica is not only intended for use by researchers and students in glaciology, geophysics, remote sensing, cartography and Antarctic research, but also informative and enjoyable for any reader interested in the seventh continent. The Atlas is accompanied by a CD-ROM containing all the atlas maps and elevation models – enabling the reader to discover a wealth of fascinating details in Antarctica!
