La politique porte l'empreinte de l'histoire, du rapport particulier que les Français entretiennent avec le et la politique. La politique est une activité principalement mise en œuvre par des professionnels : président, ministres, députés, sénateurs, députés européens, sans oublier leurs collaborateurs, les permanents des partis politiques, une large part des conseillers régionaux et généraux, ainsi qu'une partie des 36 212 maires. Mais elle s'étend aussi à tous ceux qui, sans vivre de la politique, vivent autour, dans les champs liés au champ politique (administrations, médias, etc.). Et elle inclut les citoyens qui forment « l'opinion publique mobilisée », voire le peuple silencieux des urnes et des sondages. La définition même de ce qui est politique varie dans le temps et dans l'espace : est politique à un moment donné ce qui est socialement construit comme tel. Les différents aspects de la vie politique française sont ici analysés, non pas seulement comme un ensemble de coups que des acteurs se portent dans la seule visée de conquête du pouvoir, mais comme une réalité instituée, enjeu constant d'investissements et de redéfinitions.

Die konzeptionelle Ausgestaltung der Alterssicherung, das heißt die Gratwanderung zwischen Bismarck und Beveridge, wird wegen der sich abzeichnenden demografischen Veränderungen kontrovers diskutiert. Eine besondere Bedeutung erlangte hierbei die Idee einer Bürgerrente, in der pro Kopf einheitliche Leistungen mit lohnproportionalen Beiträgen verknüpft werden. Die mit einer Bürgerrente einhergehenden Kostenwirkungen und Einkommensveränderungen für Altersrentner werden quantitativ untersucht. In einer Erweiterung des Standardrentnerkonzeptes erfolgt die Analyse auf Grundlage von empirisch ermittelten Erwerbsbiografien, die für eine bestimmte Kohorte typisch sind. Hierdurch können die Folgen einer Systemumstellung auch für Personen mit unstetigen Lebensläufen abgebildet werden.

Locating Africa on the global stage, this book examines and compares external involvement in the continent, exploring the foreign policies of major states and international organizations towards Africa. The contributors work within a political economy framework in order to study how these powers have attempted to stimulate democracy, peace and prosperity in the context of neo-liberal hegemony and ask whom these attempts have benefited and failed.

Although the last half of the twentieth century has been called the Age of Democracy, the twentyfirst has already demonstrated the fragility of its apparent triumph as the dominant form of government throughout the world.Reassessing the fate of democracy for our time, distinguished political theorist Ralph Ketcham traces the evolution of this idea over the course of four hundred years. He traces democracy's bumpy ride in a book that is both an exercise in the history of ideas and an explication of democratic theory. Ketcham examines the rationales for democratic government, identifies the fault lines that separate democracy from good government, and suggests ways to strengthen it in order to meet future challenges. Drawing on an encyclopedic command of history and politics, he examines the rationales that have been offered for democratic government over the course of four manifestations of modernity that he identifies in the Western and East Asian world since 1600.Ketcham first considers the fundamental axioms established by theorists of the Enlightenment—Bacon, Locke, Jefferson—and reflected in America's founding, then moves on to the mostly postDarwinian critiques by Bentham, Veblen, Dewey, and others that produced theories of the liberal corporate state. He explains latenineteenthcentury Asian responses to democracy as the third manifestation, grounded in Confucian respect for communal and hierarchical norms, followed by latetwentiethcentury postmodernist thought that views democratic states as oppressive and seeks to empower marginalized groups.Ketcham critiques the first, second, and fourth modernity rationales for democracy and suggests that the Asian approach may represent a reconciliation of ancient wisdom and modern science better suited to today's world. He advocates a reorientation of democracy that deemphasizes group or identity politics and restores the wholeness of the civic community, proposing a return to the Jeffersonian universalism—that which informed the founding of the United Statesif democracy is to flourish in a fifth manifestation.The Idea of Democracy in the Modern Era is an erudite, interdisciplinary work of great breadth and complexity that looks to the past in order to reframe the future.
