Abstract

Proceedings of the 2004 Structures Congress, held in Nashville, Tennessee, May 22-26, 2004. Sponsored by the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This collection contains 180 papers that explore the latest changes in codes, including wind and seismic provisions along with important new approaches, such as blast resistance, to enhance the security and stability of the structures. Rehabilitation and retrofitting emerge as a critical topic because private companies and government agencies alike are upgrading existing structures to hold the line on insurance premiums and to meet Federal Emergency Management Agency guidelines. Topics include: innovations in infrastructure design; recent trends in transportation structures; design approaches for different model building codes; restoration and repair of existing structures; seismic design concepts; project delivery systems; business and professional practice in structural engineering; ongoing theoretical and experimental research activities; and computation methods.

Abstract

Proceedings of Ports 2004 conference, held in Houston, Texas, May 23-26, 2004. Sponsored by the Ports and Harbors Technical Committee of the Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers Institute of ASCE; U.S. Section of the Permanent International Association of Navigation Congresses. Cosponsored by Port of Houston Authority; Dredging Contractors of America; International Association of Ports and Harbors; Canadian Society of Civil Engineers; Japan Society of Civil Engineers. This collection contains 136 papers that discuss current progress in port and harbor facilities development. The papers address complex, innovative, and state-of-the-art technical topics associated with planning and permitting; environmental, geotechnical, and seismic concerns; design and construction; security; and maintenance and operations of worldwide port and harbor facilities.

Abstract

Sponsored by the Task Committee on Seismic Isolation of the Seismic Effects Committee of the Dynamic Effects Technical Activity Committee of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This primer describes the current state of seismic isolation technology and highlights issues and concerns that are unique to the design of isolated structures. This concise book is full of practical knowledge related to base isolation design. The report includes the fundamentals of seismic isolation, the design of isolated structures, analysis, and testing. This book emphasizes practical issues, rather than theoretical issues, making it complementary to textbooks on earthquake engineering. The overviews in this report make the subject accessible to structural engineers who have not been formally trained in base isolation design and to architects and students in a first-level engineering course.
