Abstract

This collection of essays is brought together in the honour of Gerhardus Cornelis (Pippin) Oosthuizen on his eighty third birthday. Pippin has been one of the most significant religion researchers and prolific Humanities publishers South Africa has ever produced. Among his friends and colleagues are some of the most important scholars of religion in South Africa and elsewhere. With his critical acumen and insightful understanding of the ebb and flow of the South African socio-political landscape of the last fifty-odd years, he has been a distinguished leader in research and has been honoured with Honorary doctorates from South Africa’s leading universities. This collection constitutes a small token of appreciation for his more than fifty years in academia and his academic leadership.

Abstract

In South Africa and the Logic of Regional Cooperation, James J. Hentz addresses changes in South Africa's strategies for regional cooperation and economic development since its transition from apartheid to democracy. Hentz focuses on why the new South African government continues to make regional cooperation a priority and what methods this dominant state uses to pursue its neighborly goals. While providing a synthetic overview of the history of regional cooperation in southern Africa, Hentz considers

Abstract

The private sector and public authorities both need access to capital for investment, job creation and growth. For a number of reasons, explained in this book, Southern Africa suffers from disproportionately expensive capital and this is denying the region its full growth potential. This is a serious situation within the region, where public expectations of economic growth are being frustrated in South Africa, and in sub-Saharan Africa generally which relies on Southern Africa as both a source and a destination for investment. This book reflects the ideas and proposals of a group of experts and practitioners from the state and business environments, brought together by the Development Centre with public and private sector partners on reducing the cost of capital in the region. It provides insight into the nature of the problem of the cost of capital in Southern Africa and the effects it has on business activity and infrastructure development. In addition, the authors set out to define strategies for reducing capital cost, outlining measures suitable for government and private actors.--Publisher summary.

Abstract

This paper assesses whether regional cooperation and integration of stock exchanges in eastern and southern Africa could offer a way of overcoming impediments to the exchanges' development. The paper concludes that regional cooperation and, at a later stage, integration, if carried out at the right pace and in a pragmatic way, could improve the liquidity, efficiency, and competitiveness of these exchanges. Further progress in developing national financial markets must precede any actual moves to integrate securities markets. These exchanges could meanwhile benefit from closer cooperation, including by encouraging more crossborder listings and information/technology sharing.
