In this brief, beautifully illustrated book, the authors introduce the reader to the basic science of medical microbiology and relate it to clinical practice. Integrating concise text, over 270 full-colour diagrams and selected photomicrographs, they provide an understanding of bacterial infection and give the reader the necessary grounding to select the right antibiotics and follow logical diagnostic and management strategies. Following introductory chapters on the nature, structure and function of bacteria, the principles are then applied to each body system in turn, dealing with organisms, pathogenesis, diagnosis, treatment and public health. There are also chapters on infection control emphasising the importance of good hygiene in preventing hospital acquired infection. In the context of new problem-based curricula, the book will be welcomed especially by medical students, trainee physicians and microbiologists, laboratory biomedical scientists and nurses working in infection control.

Genetics and Regulation of Nitrogen-Fixing Bacteria This book is the second volume of a seven-volume series, which covers all fields of research related to nitrogen fixation - from basic studies through applied aspects to environmental impacts. Volume II provides a comprehensive and detailed source of information concerning the genetics and regulation of biological nitrogen fixation in free-living prokaryotes. This preface attempts to provide the reader with some insight into how this volume originated, how it was planned, and then how it developed over the several years of its production. Once the editorial team was established, the first job was to decide which of the many free-living diazotrophs that have been subjected to genetic analysis should be included in this volume. Would we need to develop specific criteria for selection or would the organisms, in effect, select themselves? Of course, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Azotobacter vinelandii, which have served (and still serve) as the main model organisms for the genetic analysis of diazotrophy, plus some of the other bacteria described in this volume, did indeed select themselves. However, there was considerable discussion surrounding well-characterized fixing species, like Azorhizobium caulinodans and Herbaspirillum seropedicae, both of which are able to fix atmospheric N under free-living conditions.

7th Jenner Glycobiology and Medicine Symposium Sunday5-W Wednesday 8 September 2004 John S. Axford StGeorge's, University of London, UK The potential for glycobiology to improve the practice of medicine has been well recognised, which is why biannual meetings concerning the association have been taking place for the last 14 years. The science of glycobiology has matured rapidly, and with it the far reaching clinical implications are becoming understood. The next decade is going to see this ?nal frontier of science conquered. The impact this understanding of glycobiology will have upon our practice of medicine is going to be exciting. The 7th Jenner Glycobiology and Medicine Symposium was designed tore?ecttheseadvances.Allthemajorclinicalareaswereinvolved, withcontributions from pivotal players in science and medicine. As with our previous meetings, junior scientists were involved as we recognise that at the end of the next decade they will be in the driving seat. This introduction serves as a taster to whet your appetite. From embryogenesis to pathogenesis, glycosylation plays a pivotal role. Complex and hybrid N-glyans and O-fucose glycans are critical in oocyte devel- ment and function. This area must surely be a fertile ground for glycosylation research.
