Abstract

Changes in information structures and requirements demand that libraries and library science redefine their positions. They must face new challenges and present definite perspectives in the form of research goals and pilot schemes. 31 original contributions by distinguished German, American, Scandinavian, Dutch and Swiss authors shed light on the following subjects: · Library science between tradition, self-conception and public perception · Library science in the age of digital media · Library science in the service of society · Library science in the service of scientific information and communication · Library science in the service of practical librarianship · Library science in teaching, studying and profession Among the issues dealt with, are the following: electronic publishing, eLearning and information ethics, the 'Open Access' debate, conveying information competence to (not only) universities, reciprocation between the economy, politics and libraries, and finally, library science training in view of librarianship in practice. The contributions are written in either German or English, depending on the author's origins. The appendix contains abstracts in English as well as an extensive bilingual index of authors. Bibliothekswissenschaft - quo vadis? Addresses librarians, information scientists, information documentalists, academics and students of all disciplines - all who create, collect, bundle, process, mediate, or prepare for use professional information.

Abstract

This volume of Advances in Library Administration and Organization offers papers of interest to practitioners and researchers in the library community throughout the world. All of the papers in one way or another address the tension between what researchers can deliver, what they define as reputable knowledge, and what library practitioners need to know to get the job done. While these papers differ from each other by problem, scale, methodology and theory, one question What can science tell us about practice? unites them all. These papers include a discussion of the principles that underlie collection development, two papers that critically examine the relation between distance learning and on site library service and two more papers that use the notion of sense making to look at what the terms leadership and public space mean when we talk about libraries. The last three papers address a series of pragmatic issues anyone who works within a library can identify with, namely, what does it mean to market a library, how can we define value in relation to what goes on in a library and create value for our communities, and, finally, What constitutes and impedes 'success for library professionals? , especially if those who are minority women. These papers, taken together, raise the issues of how well we understand, researchers and practitioners alike, the institutions we study, manage and work within. What we in the profession often regard as common sense and good practice may not really be either. In short, these papers point to a number of issues, ones we often do not even acknowledge, that researchers need to help practitioners address if science is to make a difference in how librarians understand and manage the institutions they work within.

Individual chapters deal with issues such as: digital library users and the services that are offered to them, the standards and protocols with which digital libraries must operate in order to cooperate with other institutions, and issues such as the administration of digital libraries, including discussion of intellectual property rights and preservation issues. A final chapter comprises eight case studies

Abstract

separated by the exigencies of the design life cycle into another compartment, that makes invisible the (prior) technical work of engineers that is not directly pertinent to the application work of practitioners. More recently (and notably after the work of Greisemer and Star) the black box has been opened and infrastructure has been discussed in terms of the social relations of an extended group of actors that includes developers. Ethical and political issues are involved (cf f accountable computing). Writing broadly within this context, Day (chapter 11) proposes that the concept of 'surface' can assist us to explore space as the product of 'power and the affective and expressive role for materials', rather than the background to this. Surfaces are the 'variously textured…sites for mixtures between bodies', and are thus the 'sites for events'. The notions of 'folding' and 'foldability' and 'unfolding' are discussed at length, as metaphors that account for the interactions of bodies in space across time. Some of the contributors to this volume focus on ways in which we may experience multiple infrastructures. Dix and his colleagues, for example, in chapter 12 explore a complex of models - of spatial context, of 'mixed reality boundaries' and of human spatial understanding across a number of field projects that make up the Equator project to explain the ways in which co-existing multiple spaces are experienced.

Abstract

This book is written for members of the scholarly research community, and for persons involved in research evaluation and research policy. More specifically, it is directed towards the following four main groups of readers: – All scientists and scholars who have been or will be subjected to a quantitative assessment of research performance using citation analysis. – Research policy makers and managers who wish to become conversant with the basic features of citation analysis, and about its potentialities and limitations. – Members of peer review committees and other evaluators, who consider the use of citation analysis as a tool in their assessments. – Practitioners and students in the field of quantitative science and technology studies, informetrics, and library and information science. Citation analysis involves the construction and application of a series of indicators of the ‘impact’, ‘influence’ or ‘quality’ of scholarly work, derived from citation data, i.e. data on references cited in footnotes or bibliographies of scholarly research publications. Such indicators are applied both in the study of scholarly communication and in the assessment of research performance. The term ‘scholarly’ comprises all domains of science and scholarship, including not only those fields that are normally denoted as science – the natural and life sciences, mathematical and technical sciences – but also social sciences and humanities.
