Abstract

This volume is intended to provide researchers and graduate students with the basic aspects of the continuum modeling of electroelastic interactions in solids. A concise treatment of linear, nonlinear, static and dynamic theories and problems is presented. The emphasis on formulation and understanding of problems useful in device applications rather than solution techniques of mathematical problems. The mathematics used in this book is minimal. Audience This volume is suitable for a one-semester graduate course on electroelasticity. It can also be used as a reference for graduate students and researchers in mechanics and acoustics.

Abstract

Undergraduate Algebra is a text for the standard undergraduate algebra course. It concentrates on the basic structures and results of algebra, discussing groups, rings, modules, fields, polynomials, finite fields, Galois Theory, and other topics. The author has also included a chapter on groups of matrices which is unique in a book at this level. Throughout the book, the author strikes a balance between abstraction and concrete results, which enhance each other. Illustrative examples accompany the general theory. Numerous exercises range from the computational to the theoretical, complementing results from the main text. For the third edition, the author has included new material on product structure for matrices (e.g. the Iwasawa and polar decompositions), as well as a description of the conjugation representation of the diagonal group. He has also added material on polynomials, culminating in Noah Snyder's proof of the Mason-Stothers polynomial abc theorem. About the First Edition: The exposition is down-to-earth and at the same time very smooth. The book can be covered easily in a one-year course and can be also used in a one-term course...the flavor of modern mathematics is sprinkled here and there. - Hideyuki Matsumura, Zentralblatt

Abstract

This monograph presents the mechanics of vibration, buckling and bending of elastic structures with inclined members such as x-braced high rise frames and conical shells. More than giving detailed derivations of basic equations Mechanics of Elastic Structures with Inclined Members is mainly oriented on practical problem solving. The book can be used as a textbook for graduate students concentrating on structural mechanics or as a reference book for engineers and researchers in the fields of engineering mechanics, civil engineering, mechanical engineering and aerospace engineering.

Abstract

Dimitris Drikakis is Professor and Head of Fluid Mechanics and Computational Science Group at Cranfield University, United Kingdom. His research interests include computational methods, modeling of turbulent flows, unsteady aerodynamics, flow instabilities, shock waves and gas dynamics, biological flows, computational nanotechnology and nanoscience, and high performance computing. William Rider is project and team leader in the Continuum Dynamics Group in the Computer and Computational Sciences Division of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), U.S.A. His principal interest is computational physics with an emphasis on fluid dynamics, radiation transport, turbulent mixing, shock physics, code verification, code validation and models for turbulence. This book covers the basic techniques for simulating incompressible and low-speed flows with high fidelity in conjunction with high-resolution methods. This includes techniques for steady and unsteady flows with high-order time integration and multigrid methods, as well as specific issues associated with interfacial and turbulent flows. The book is addressed to a broad readership, including engineers and scientists concerned with the development or application of computational methods for fluid flow problems in: Mechanical, Aerospace, Civil and Chemical Engineering, Biological Flows, Atmospheric and Oceanographic Applications as well as other Environmental disciplines. It can be used for teaching postgraduate courses on Computational Fluid Dynamics and Numerical Methods in Engineering and Applied Mathematics, and can also be used as a complementary textbook in undergraduate CFD courses.

Abstract

Most books on this subject are designed for elective courses in "intermediate dynamics" covering advanced Newtonian and introductory Lagrangian methods. Such books do not give adequate emphasis to advanced topics in Newton-Euler dynamics. Because the first required course in dynamics usually concentrates on 2-D dynamics, important 3-D problems are left to a further course. Examples are robots, automated manufacturing devices, aerospace vehicles, and biomechanical components. This material cannot be covered adequately in one course if it is to be shared with an introduction to Langrangian methods. This text is devoted to application of Newton-Euler methods to complex, real-life 3-D dynamics problems; it essentially completes this topic.

Abstract

The volume is devoted to the Dynamics of Rods. It is a sequel to "Statics of Rods" by the same author. The main goal of the book is to present systematically theoretical fundamentals of the mechanics of rods as well as numerical methods used for practical purposes. Linear and nonlinear equations governing a rod's oscillations are presented. Methods of determining eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in conservative and non-conservative problems along with numerical methods dealing with forced, parametric, and random oscillations of rods are given. Some issues of interaction of rods with air (liquid) flows and the dynamics of space-curved rods containing flows of liquid are considered. The book consists of nine chapters and appendices and may be conventionally divided into two parts. That is, Chapters 1 to 6 contain, in the main, theoretical material, whereas Chapters 7 to 9 illustrate the application of the theoretical results to problems of practical interest. Problems for self-study are found in Chapters 3, 5, and 7. The solutions to most of the problems are given in Appendix B. The monograph is addressed to undergraduate and postgraduate students and teaching staff of technical universities. It may also be useful for scientists and mechanical engineers working in a wide range of industries.

Abstract

The book covers not only practical aspects but also the underlying theoretical approaches. It also covers the fundamentals of rock mechanics. It addresses not only students but also professionals who are interested to understand the underlying principles and methods and - possibly - to further develop them. Emphasis is given to the mechanical approach rather than to hardly tractable empirical statements. The text is concise and comprises a large list of citations. Publications of the English and German speaking scientific communities have been taken into account.
