The use of directed cell models to study the manner in which two or more cells interact has revolutionized our understanding of protein-protein interactions in a complex milieu and has provided an invaluable platform for the identification of new molecules. In Cell-Cell Interactions: Methods and Protocols, highly skilled experts in the development and utilization of cell-cell interaction assays describe in detail their best methods-based approaches, both in vitro and in vivo, for uncovering cellular interactions at the molecular level. The protocols cover a diverse set of cell-cell interaction models in both normal and pathological states, are readily adaptable to nearly any cell type and organ system, and include primary data and outcome analysis. In addition, the protocols follow the successful Methods in Molecular Biology™ series format, each offering step-by-step laboratory instructions, an introduction outlining the principles behind the technique, lists of the necessary equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls. Insightful to beginners and inspiring to seasoned professionals, Cell-Cell Interactions: Methods and Protocols provides the cutting-edge and versatile laboratory tools needed to gain a basic understanding of cell-cell interactions.

Clinical Research Methods for Surgeons is a comprehensive guide for the surgical scientist, and serves as both a critical review of existing literature and a reference guide for clinical research methodologies as they apply to surgery. The text addresses the clinical research questions facing 21st century surgeons, and provides clear direction on how to incorporate sophisticated research techniques into practice. In addition to the surgical generalist, this practical volume is specifically oriented to surgeons who treat unique diseases, yet have no single resource to facilitate clinical research in these specific areas. This comprehensive and easy-to-use guide encompasses the entire process of clinical study design, application, and assessment. Part One is aimed at the young surgeon about to engage in new studies, and gives a general overview of the infrastructure of clinical research. Parts Two and Three are geared towards experienced investigators interested in pursuing clinical research and surgeons reviewing the literature for practical application. Part Two focuses on study design and related statistical issues, while Part Three is concerned with measuring and assessing the outcome of clinical studies. Part Four presents topics of interest to the active investigator, such as quality of care and cost-effectiveness analyses. Clinical Research Methods for Surgeons is relevant to both beginning investigators and established researchers, and addresses the unique concerns of surgical diseases and acknowledges that they require special approaches to deal with clinical questions.

Biomedicine is the dominant organizing framework of modern medicine but it is not the only lens through which health, illness and disease can be understood. This interdisciplinary collection of essays brings together scholars from around the world who seek to probe the boundaries of biomedicine. This book is the outcome of the third global conference on ""Making Sense of: Health, Illness and Disease,"" held at St Catherine's College, Oxford, in July 2004. The papers selected for this volume take a variety of theoretical positions but share an interest in the social study of health, illness and

This volume will be a collection of chapters from authors with wide experience in their research field. The purpose is to produce a coherent book that reflects the common theme of theory in medical thinking and multidisciplinary research practice. In this context ""theory"" relates to frameworks of concepts, facts, models etc that help to inform practitioners (clinicians, scientists and engineers) both within their own fields and as they seek to share dialogue with colleagues from other fields. The book will therefore be integrative across a broad spectrum of fields within medicine. To
