The eight papers in this volume examine the spatial organization of a variety of Austronesian houses and relate the domestic design of these houses to the social and ritual practices of the specific groups who reside within them. The houses considered in this volume range from longhouses in Borneo to the meeting-houses of the Maori of New Zealand and from the magnificent houses of the Minangkabau of Sumatra to the simpler dwellings of the population of Goodenough Island in Papua New Guinea. Together these papers indicate common features of domestic design from island South-East Asia to Melanesia and the Pacific. This volume is a publication of the Research School of Pacific Studies' Comparative Austronesian Project.

Dans la saga des Congrès internationaux d'architecture moderne (CIAM), celui consacré à la formulation d'une Charte de l'habitat qui se déroule à Aix-en-Provence en 1953 tient une place mythique. La jeune génération des architectes inscrits dans le Mouvement Moderne reconsidère l'héritage et affirme son indépendance. Organisée internationalement dans le Team-Ten, elle s'inscrit dans un mouvement plus large en phase avec les sensibilités de l'après-guerre et qui préfigure bien des problématiques actuelles.Ce sont les attendus, les propositions et les formes de ce courant que l'on pourrait rétrospectivement qualifier de « Modernité critique » qui ont été au centre des contributions et des questionnements du colloque international qui s'est tenu à Aix-en-Provence en octobre 2003 à la Maison Méditerranéenne des Sciences et de l'Homme, et qui ont été réunis dans cet ouvrage. Le colloque et l'ouvrage ont été coordonnés par Jean-Lucien Bonillo, Claude Massu et Daniel Pinson.
