Abstract

A significant and core text in occupational therapy for more than 8 years, Dr. Ann Wilcock's revolutionary "An Occupational Perspective of Health" has been updated and enhanced into a much-anticipated Second Edition. This unique text that examines the relationship between occupation, health, and ill-health explores the occupational experience within populations and offers more information critical to the practice of occupational therapy. Based on extensive studies of human history and occupation, Dr. Wilcock takes a holistic approach of health in line with that of the World Health Organization, examining the necessity for occupational therapists and their role in promoting health and well-being for all people. "An Occupational Perspective of Health" uncovers a different way to understand health by exploring the physical, social, mental, environmental, and spiritual dimensions that lead to or result from occupation. Dr. Wilcock takes a global perspective by approaching health from this angle, rather than just considering medical or social factors. The text considers the growth, development, and enhancement potential of involvement. This valuable resource supports and explains the historical and rational foundations of the advancing field of occupational therapy, by showing the link between occupation and existence. Addressed in this edition are: a conceptualization of health in the past, present, and future; the role of occupation in human life, health, and survival; occupation as a positive or negative influence on well-being; the potential contribution of occupational therapy to current WHO public/population health objectives; and possible action for OTs to become recognized as health-promoting professionals at population levels. Clinicians and students of occupational therapy, as well as other professionals working in public health, will benefit from and relate to this admired and essential text.

Abstract

For some systems, such as aircraft, submarines, military systems and aerospace systems, it is extremely important to avoid failure during actual operation because it is dangerous and disastrous. The study of various maintenance policies and models in order to improve system reliability, to prevent the occurrence of system failure, and to reduce maintenance costs is an important area in reliability engineering. Proper maintenance techniques have been emphasized in recent years due to the increased safety and reliability requirements of systems, and the increased complexity and rising costs of material and labor. Based on the authors’ research, Reliability and Optimal Maintenance presents the latest theories and methods of reliability and maintenance with an emphasis on multi-component systems, while also considering the current hot topics in reliability and maintenance including: imperfect repair, economic dependence and opportunistic maintenance, and correlated failure and repair. Software reliability and maintenance cost, and warranty cost considerations are also considered. Postgraduates, researchers, and practitioners in reliability engineering, maintenance engineering, operations research, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, logistics, management, and statistics will find this book a state-of-the-art survey of reliability and maintenance theory and models. Springer Series in Reliability Engineering publishes high-quality books in important areas of current theoretical research and development in reliability, and in areas that bridge the gap between theory and application in areas of interest to practitioners in industry, laboratories, business, and government.

Abstract

This book presents notions and ideas from the foundations of a statistical treatment of risks. Bayesian methods are frequently used in that area, hence a reasonable proportion of the presentation is devoted to such approaches. Modern statistical tools, namely Poisson regression, analysis of deviance, extreme-value theory and threshold methods are also used to identify and solve practical problems. The knowledge of such tools facilitates the understanding of the role of probability in risk analysis and proper use of outputs given by software packages. The book is written with a student in mind who has studied elementary undergraduate courses in engineering mathematics, perhaps including an introductory course in statistics. The text emphasizes an understanding of the theory and methods presented. Hence, comments are given verbally and an intuitive reasoning is frequent. This is not just another new textbook on elementary probability and statistics, but focuses strongly on applications within the field of risk and safety analysis.

Abstract

Group coordination and cooperative control are topics currently receiving a lot of interest. Coordinating the motion of a group of relatively simple and inexpensive agents can cover a larger operational area and achieve complex tasks exceeding the abilities of a single agent. This enables applications such as teams of robots for de-mining operations, aerospace formation flying for survey, fleets of AUVs for oceanographic mapping, and ships doing coordinated towing operations. Inspired by the progress in the field, a Workshop on Group Coordination and Cooperative Control was organised in Tromsø, Norway, 2006. The objective was to focus on control theoretic challenges that group coordination and cooperation raise, and lay the ground for future research on this. The presentations included recent results and discussions of theoretical challenges, industrial needs, unresolved problems and future research directions. This volume contains the contributions of the workshop. The book covers a wide range of subjects within the area of group coordination and cooperative control, and forms a valuable and up-to-date text on the newer trends in group coordination and cooperative control.

Abstract

Computer software reliability has never been more important. Today, computers are employed in areas as diverse as air traffic control, nuclear reactors, aircraft, real-time military, industrial process control, security system control, biometric scan-systems, automotive, mechanical and safety control, and hospital patient monitoring systems. Many of these applications require critical functionality as software applications increase in size and complexity. System Software Reliability is an introduction to software reliability engineering as well as a detailed survey of the state-of-the-art techniques, methodologies and tools used to assess the reliability of software and combined software-hardware systems. The most recent research results in the field are reported and future directions in the subject are signposted. This comprehensive text will be of interest to: • graduate students as an introduction to software reliability engineering and a textbook for graduate courses; • software and reliability engineers as a comprehensive and up-to-date survey of the field; and, • researchers and lecturers in universities and research institutions as a one-volume reference. The Springer Series in Reliability Engineering publishes high-quality books in important areas of current theoretical research and development in reliability, and in areas that bridge the gap between theory and application in areas of interest to practitioners in industry, laboratories, business, and government.
